2017-18 BGSU Swimming and Diving Schedule
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team, along with head coach Matt Ense, announced their complete 2017-18 meet schedule on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 7). The schedule stretches from the team's intrasquad meet on Sept. 22 to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio on March 16-18, 2018. The Falcons will compete in seven separate dual meets, four of which are against Mid-American Conference rivals.
BGSU will host its annual Orange and Brown intrasquad meet in Cooper Pool at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. The Falcons begin the regular season one week later, at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, when they welcome St. Francis (Pa.) to Cooper Pool. The Red Flash was 11-8 in dual meets last season but went 0-4 in true road events.
"We kick off our dual meet season a little earlier than normal with the St. Francis meet," said Ense. "It will be great to have our 15 newcomers get some early racing and diving experience behind them before we hit the main part of the dual meet season in October."
Following the St. Francis meet, the swimming and diving team will help celebrate Homecoming 2017 by hosting the annual Jean Campbell Alumni Meet. That will take place in Cooper Pool beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. The annual Tom Stubbs Relays, which are also traditionally a part of Homecoming weekend, will take a one year hiatus and return for the 2018-19 season.
BGSU hits the main portion of its dual meet season on Oct. 21 with a double-dual meet at home against Xavier and Tiffin. The Falcons' first conference dual takes place one week following the double-dual, when they host Eastern Michigan. EMU finished second at the 2017 MAC Championships.
Bowling Green finally hits the road for the first time during the 2017-18 season on Saturday, Nov. 4, as they travel to Oxford, Ohio for a dual against the Miami RedHawks. Six days later, the team travels to East Lansing, Mich. to compete against the Michigan State Spartans. BGSU seeks to avenge dual meet losses to both Miami and MSU last season.
The Falcons' only December meet is the Zippy Invitational, a three-day event held in Akron, Ohio from Dec. 1-3. The team will then get six weeks away from competition before returning to the pool in Buffalo, N.Y. for the Buffalo Diving Meet, which is held from Jan. 12-14, 2018.
"We are excited to have our divers attending the Buffalo Diving meet in early January," Ense said. "This will help them continue to improve on their recent performances and grow so they can climb the conference standings on the boards."
BGSU's final two dual meets of the regular season are against Ohio and Toledo. Bowling Green travels to Athens, Ohio for the meet with the Bobcats on Saturday, Jan. 27. They return home for their final event of the season at Cooper Pool against the arch-rival Rockets. The event will serve as the team's senior send-off and will take place over two days, from Feb. 2-3, 2018. The Falcons defeated Toledo 196-95 last season.
"To be able to have our senior meet be the last meet of the year at home against Toledo, that is very special. It will be an electric atmosphere for our seniors to have their last races in front of their home fans," said Ense.
Bowling Green's 2017-18 regular season concludes with the Michigan First Chance Meet, in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Feb. 15. The Falcons travel back to Athens, Ohio for the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships (Feb. 21-24), then will compete at the NCAA Last Chance Meet in Columbus, Ohio on Feb. 25.
Any members of the BGSU team who qualify for NCAA meets will compete at the NCAA Diving Zones in March or the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio (March 16-18).
