Aliyah Gustafson Named MAC Field Athlete Of The Week
January 23, 2018 | Women's Track and Field
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Aliyah Gustafson has been named the Mid-American Conference's Field Athlete of the Week. Gustafson won both the shot put and the weight throw at the Tom Wright Classic, breaking her own school record in the shot put.
Gustafson threw the shot put 55-feet-10.5, shattering the school record by more than 18 inches. It marked the sixth time in her career, and third time in three meets in 2017-18, that she has broken that record. Gustafson's toss moved her up from 10th to eighth nationally in the event as she attempts to become the first BGSU student-athlete since 2001 to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. A year ago, her throw would have been enough to qualify for the 16-person field in 14th place. Gustafson ranks first in the MAC by more than five feet in the event.
Along with the tremendous performance in the shot put, Gustafson set a new personal best in the weight throw, winning the event with a mark of 64-6.5, moving up to 21st nationally. She currently ranks third in the event in the MAC, behind only Kent State's Gabrielle Figueroa and BGSU teammate Elizabeth Iversen.
