BGSU Carries MAC's Top GPA for Third Straight Semester
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced their list of Scholar All-America teams for the Fall 2017 semester on Monday morning (Jan. 29). The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team once again earned the honor and are one of 688 teams from 430 colleges and universities to be recognized. Institutions from all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA are eligible; to qualify, teams must carry a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale during the Fall 2017 semester. All eligible varsity student-athletes are used to calculate a team's GPA. The 688 teams set a new record for the most CSCAAÂ Scholar All-America teams in a single semester.
The Falcons continue their run of incredible classroom achievement under head coach Matt Ense, who is in his third year at the helm of the program. In each of his five semesters as head coach, BGSU swimmers and divers have earned at least a 3.63 GPA. Last fall, the team earned a cumulative 3.64 GPA, which was the best in the Mid-American Conference and tied for ninth among the 173 NCAA Division I women's teams that earned this award. Last spring, the team ranked fifth nationally and was again the best in the MAC with a 3.69 GPA. The Falcons were second nationally in the Spring 2016 semester, just one-tenth of a point behind South Carolina. They also earned GPAs of 3.63 in Fall 2015 and 3.66 in Fall 2016.
Ense said, "Our women did another amazing job in the classroom this past semester posting their fifth straight semester above a 3.63 semester GPA, and this marks the fifth semester in a row that the team ranks in the top 10 in the country for team GPA. It is very rewarding to see their hard work pay off and the hard work that the support staff gives our student athletes. Our women are provided a great environment to be their best in the classroom, and I cannot thank our support staff enough for helping our team be the best they can be."
The CSCAA was founded in 1922, and it is the oldest organization of college coaches in America. The organization is dedicated to serve swimming and diving
coaches and provide leadership for the advancement of the sport at the collegiate level. Each semester, the CSCAA recognizes qualifying programs as Scholar-All-America Teams. For the CSCAA Scholar All-America news release, including the schools and GPAs for all honored teams, click HERE.
BGSUÂ will host its final home meet of the 2017-18 season on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3 at Cooper Pool, as the Falcons will host arch-rival Toledo in a dual meet. Bowling Green will celebrate Senior Day on Friday and will recognize the team's five seniors during the meet. In three weeks, the Falcons will head to Athens, Ohio for the 2018 MAC Chamipioniships.
