UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, riding a seven-match win streak, prepares for a pair of difficult challenges this weekend. Head coach Matt Fannon and the first-place Falcons host the preseason Mid-American Conference favorite, Kent State University, on Friday night (Oct. 12). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. The Golden Flashes have won four-straight matches heading into the weekend.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will wrap up a three-match homestand on Sunday (Oct. 14), with a 1:00 p.m. contest vs. Ohio University at Cochrane. The Bobcats have lost just once in six MAC matches this season. As always, admission to all Falcon home regular-season soccer action is free.
GREAT START!
• The Falcons are off to a 6-0-0 start in MAC play for the first time in program history. BGSU has outscored the opponents, 14-1, in conference matches to date.
• With five regular-season games remaining, BG has matched the league win total for all of last season. The 2017 club went 6-4-1 in MAC regular-season play, finishing second in the East Division and fourth overall.
• Prior to this season, the only Falcon team to win as many as three-straight games to kick off the conference campaign was the 2000 club. Only five BGSU teams – the 1999, 2000, '06, '10 and this year's squad – have begun the MAC schedule with as many as two consecutive wins.
TWO IS A MAGIC NUMBER (BUT SOMETIMES ONE IS ENOUGH)
• Sunday's (Oct. 7) 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan was the Falcons' 21st victory since Matt Fannon was named head coach prior to the 2017 season. But, that EMU match marked the first time in the Fannon Era that BG won a match when scoring fewer than two goals.
• In the Fannon Era, BGSU is a perfect 20-0-0 when scoring at least twice, and the Falcons are now 1-10-3 when being held to fewer than two goals.
ZERO IS A MAGIC NUMBER AS WELL
• Central Michigan's goal late in Thursday's (Oct. 4) match snapped numerous shutout streaks for junior Kathleen Duwve and the Falcons. BGSU had tied the school record for consecutive shutouts, with five, before the Chippewas put a ball into the back of the net with under four minutes remaining and the Falcons leading by three goals.
• Duwve saw her personal shutout streak snapped at a career-long 448:07. That ranks as the third-longest such streak by an individual. Alexa Arsenault holds the record with a shutout streak of 606:31 during the 2008 season. Christy Zabek held opponents off the board for a stretch of 544:48 in 2005 and '06.
• As a team, the Falcons went a total of 538:07 without allowing a goal, the second-longest shutout streak in program history. The school record is 606:31 without allowing a goal, set by Arsenault and the 2008 club.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons are 8-3-2 this season, and BGSU enters the KSU match with a 6-0-0 record in conference play. As mentioned, the Falcons are off to by far the best MAC start in program history.
• BGSU has won seven-straight games dating to the final non-league match of the season, and the Falcons are unbeaten in the last eight matches (7-0-1).
• After scoring the first goal of the match just once in the first five contests of the season, the Falcons have scored first in each of the last eight matches. On the year, BGSU is 8-0-1 when scoring first, and the Falcons are 0-3-1 when the opponent scores first.
• The Falcons are 5-1-1 at home, 3-2 on the road and 0-0-1 in neutral-site matches this season to date. BGSU has outscored opponents, 25-7, including 14-1 in the six conference contests.
• Senior Erica Hubert and junior Chelsee Washington have paced the BG offense this season. Hubert has team-high totals of eight goals and 22 points, and has a five-match point-scoring streak, with 12 points in that time.
• Washington has six goals and 18 points, and she has recorded six assists to tie Hubert for the team lead in that category. Four of her six goals have proven to be the game winner, and she was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on Sept. 25.
• Junior Maureen Kennedy and redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox each have nine points, tying them for third on the club. Cox is third on the team with four goals, and scored the winner in Sunday's EMU match. Kennedy is third in assists, with five, and is one-third of a veteran back line (along with seniors Morgan Abbitt and Alexis Fricke) that has helped BG to five shutouts in six MAC matches.
• Junior Kathleen Duwve has started all 13 matches in goal this season, and has 49 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.55. She has posted five complete-match shutouts and combined on two other clean sheets.
• In MAC play, Duwve's GAA is a miniscule 0.18. She has allowed just one goal in 495 minutes, and has a saves percentage of .950 in conference clashes this season.
• A total of 27 players have seen action in at least one match this year, and 17 of those players have made at least one start.
• Head coach Matt Fannon and his staff – assistant coaches Cian McDonald, Dan Ball and Erin Kielmeyer – welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's team. BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, and the Falcons placed second in the MAC's East Division.
• The Falcons were the most improved team in the MAC a year ago, with a four-game improvement over the 2016 season. BGSU's turnaround tied the team for 28th in the country in that department.
• BG' total of 13 victories a year ago was the second-highest in school history, while the Falcons' six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008.
• Fannon was voted the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year, and the Brown and Orange had four All-MAC Team selections. Two of those four returned, as Hubert was one of three Falcons to earn all-league first-team honors a season ago, while Alexis Fricke was named to the all-conference second team.
• The Falcons are 12-4-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 14-5-1 in all games vs. conference foes since Fannon assumed the helm prior to the 2017 season.
THE OPPONENTS
• Kent State is 8-5-1 overall, and the Golden Flashes are tied for second in the MAC standings with a 4-2 league ledger. KSU has won four-straight matches, including victories against Buffalo and Akron last weekend. The Flashes are 5-1-0 at home, 3-3-1 on the road and 0-1 at neutral sites this year. Vital Kats has 17 points, while Maddie Holmes has 12 and Isabelle Mihail 11. All three players have scored five goals to date. Faith O'Neill has played in 11 of KSU's 14 matches, and has a 1.41 GAA and three shutouts. Last year, coach Rob Marinaro's club went 13-6-2 overall and won the MAC regular-season title with a 9-2-0 league ledger.
• Ohio is 5-5-3 overall, and the Bobcats are 3-1-2 in the MAC heading into a Friday match at Toledo. The 'Cats tied with UA and defeated UB, with both matches going to overtime, last weekend. Ohio is 2-1-2 at home and 3-4-1 on the road, but the 'Cats are 2-1 away from home in MAC play. Abby Townsend leads a balanced scoring attack with four goals and nine points, while Alivia Milesky has eight points, including three goals. Sydney Malham has played in nine of the team's 13 matches in goal, and has four shutouts and a GAA of just 0.82. Last year, coach Aaron Rodgers's team went 7-10-3 overall and 4-5-2 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• BGSU leads Kent State, 13-7-5, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Falcons captured both of last year's meetings on the road, with a 3-1 regular-season win and a 2-1 victory in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament. In the teams' last game at Cochrane, the Flashes picked up a 1-0 win in 2016. BGSU is 6-2-5 in home matches and 7-5-0 on the road vs. KSU through the years.
• The Falcons trail Ohio, 12-4-5, in that series, but BGSU has a two-match series unbeaten streak, with a 2-0 win two years ago in the last meeting at Cochrane, and a 1-1 draw in Athens last fall. BG is 4-5-2 at home and just 0-7-3 on the road vs. the Bobcats. The Falcons have scored fewer goals against Ohio (13) than against any other MAC team, and BGSU's average of 0.62 goals per game vs. the Bobcats is the team's lowest against any conference foe.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the Ohio match, the Falcons will hit the road for a pair of games. BGSU will face Akron on Thursday night, Oct. 18, and the Falcons will venture to Buffalo to meet the Bulls on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21.
• Then, BGSU will conclude the regular-season schedule by hosting arch-rival Toledo on Thursday, Oct. 25. That contest will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. Admission to all home regular-season matches is free.
