Cross Country Prepared For MAC Championships
October 23, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The BGSU cross country programs will return to northwest Ohio for the MAC Championships, to be held in Toledo at Ottawa Park Golf Course on Saturday (Oct. 27). The women's 6k will take place first, starting at 11 am, followed by the men's 8k at 12 pm.
A Look At The Competition
The Falcons have fared well in the MAC this year, most recently facing Kent State and Toledo at the Bradley Pink Classic. At Bradley, the men took a sixth place finish, ahead of both Kent State (23rd) and Toledo (26th). As for the women's team, they came away in 22nd, edging out Kent State (23rd), but falling short of Toledo (5th). Western Michigan also participated in the women's event, finishing 39th.
Preseason Polls
The preseason polls, released in August, spotted both Bowling Green teams to finish near the middle of the pack. The men's team was selected to finish fourth and the women fifth. The polls had Miami winning the men's competition with Eastern Michigan taking the women's side.Â
The Course
The Falcons had an opportunity to run this course earlier in the season when both teams participated in the Toledo Rockets Invitational in late-August. At that meet, the men's team finished in third behind Eastern Michigan and Buffalo, with Noah Schaub finishing in second for the Falcons. The women's team did not record a score, but provided many runners with the opportunity to test the course. The Toledo Invitational was BGSU's first event of the year, making way for growth throughout the season.Â
Standing Firm
The men's team remains ranked 13th in the Great Lakes Region according to the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings. The Falcons sit behind two MAC teams, Miami (7th) and Central Michigan (12th). The MAC also has four teams ranked in the women's poll with Eastern Michigan (7th), Miami (8th), Toledo (10th), and Western Michigan (12th) finding their way into the Top 15.
Historic Opportunity
The Bowling Green athletes have the ability to etch their names in history this weekend, both individually and as a team. "There is a lot of opportunity for us on Saturday," said Coach Lou Snelling. "Those that are hungry and savvy enough can make history."
Awards Watch
Saturday the top 14 finishers for both men and women's will be named members of the All-Conference team. Finishers in places 1-7 will receive first team honors, while 8-14 will receive second team. Also, the top placing freshman for both men and women's will be named Freshman of the Year, all eligible individuals must be in their first year of eligibility. The top three finishers for men and women's will receive individual awards with the top placing men and women's team receiving awards as well.
Up Next
Following the MAC Championships, the Orange and Brown will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional event. This year, the event will be held in Terre Haute, Ind. on Friday, Nov. 9. The Falcons tested the course for Regionals when they participated in the John McNichols Invitational on Sept. 15.Â
