YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team shot an opening-round 297 on Monday (Oct. 8) at the Shirley Spork Invitational. Bowling Green owns a five-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes of golf tomorrow. The event was played at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Â
Fog entered the area early in the morning, delaying the start of play until about 11 a.m. The delay also forced the field to play just 18 holes on the day. The tournament, which was originally scheduled to feature 36 holes today and 18 holes tomorrow, will now just play 36 holes total. The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played tomorrow as scheduled.
Â
BGSU's 297 was the program's lowest 18-hole score since carding a 296 in the second round of the KZoo Classic last season (Oct. 2, 2017).
Â
Jessica Madry (T-3), Julia Durkin (T-6) and Katie Whitfield (T-9) all sit inside the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. Madry shot a career-low 71 (-1) on the day, playing the front nine at one-under, while mixing in a pair of birdies on the back nine. Madry is just one shot off the lead. Durkin came just one stroke off tying her career low, as her 73 has her tied for sixth place. Whitfield led Bowling Green in the opening round with four birdies.
Â
Bowling Green's first-place lineup was capped off by efforts from Erin Fahey (79), Sammi Blackburn (80) and Nichole Cox (85). Cox was competing for the Orange and Brown as an individual.
