Brett, Spielman & Trice to join BGSU in 2019-20 academic year
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Robyn Fralick has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Elissa Brett (Adelaide, Australia), Macy Spielman (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Olivia Trice (Huber Heights, Ohio) will join the Falcon program for the 2019-20 academic year.
"We are so excited about our 2019 recruiting class," said Fralick. "Each player represents what we value in BGSU women's basketball: they are winners, and they provide versatility on the court while embodying our core values. We are so excited to see the impact they have both on and off the court for Bowling Green State University women's basketball and in the community."
Brett, a 5-10 guard, is a native of Adelaide, Australia, and plays for Sturt Sabres Basketball Club. Last year, she was one of only two South Australians awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Canberra. She played for the CoE in the in South Eastern Australian Basketball League, and also made the Australian Gems Squad ahead of the 2018 FIBA Under18 Asian Championships. Additionally, Brett represented South Australia at the Under 20's Australian National Junior Championships in Gosford, New South Wales, and she will play for the South Australia U20 team once again in Canberra in February.
"Elissa Brett will be a combo guard for us, and her size and athleticism will be great in our style of play," said Fralick. "She loves to defend and rebounds the ball very well from the guard position. She has been playing and training at a high level for the Centre of Excellence located at the Australian Institute in Sport. I am excited to see Elissa's high-level training transfer to her time playing at Bowling Green State University."
Spielman, a 5-10 guard, is in her senior season at Upper Arlington H.S., under coach Chris Savage. An All-Ohio Capital Conference First-Team selection in each of her first three years with the Golden Bears, she was named to the All-Ohio Third Team in her junior year. She earned All-Central District First-Team accolades last season after being named to the second team the previous year and the third team as a freshman. Spielman has been named one of the top-10 players in all divisions by the District 10 Coaches Association in each of her first three seasons, and was one of just five players (in all divisions) chosen to the Columbus Dispatch All-Metro First Team last year. The Golden Bears have gone 55-21 over her first three seasons, with a district title and a district runner-up finish in that time. She has played AAU ball for OHIO Future..
"Macy Spielman is an athletic combo guard," said Fralick. "She adds a great physical presence at the guard position and has the ability to score in a variety of ways, while defending multiple positions. I love her leadership and genuine enthusiasm for the team."
Trice, a 5-8 guard, is currently in her senior season at Wayne H.S., playing for coach Travis Trice Sr., her father. A two-time All-Greater Western Ohio Conference Second-Team selection, she also has been named to the District 15 All-Underclassman Team in each of the last two years. Last year, she averaged 8.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Warriors, and shot 31.3 percent from three-point range. A National Honor Society member with a 4.3 grade-point average, she has been a member of student council in all four years, and was named Miss Wayne High this year. Trice has already earned over 30 college credits. She has played AAU ball for the West Virginia Thunder.
"Olivia Trice is a guard that has grown up in a gym," said Fralick. "Her basketball IQ, defensive versatility, and ability to shoot the ball will really impact our team. She will also immediately add leadership and work ethic to the program."
The Falcons have 15 student-athletes, including two seniors – Maddie Cole and Sydney Lambert – on the 2018-19 roster. BGSU is 1-1 on the young season after Tuesday night's (Nov. 13) 99-76 win over Marshall in the home opener. The Falcons host Robert Morris on Saturday (Nov. 17), in a 2:00 p.m. tipoff at the Stroh Center.
