UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS...Â
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team concludes a three-game home swing with a Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 20) matchup. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons will face Loyola University Chicago in an 11:00 a.m. start at the Stroh Center.
SCHOOL DAYSÂ
Tuesday's game vs. Loyola Chicago is the Falcons' annual School Day game, and a large number of children from area schools will be in attendance. Last season, a youth-dominated crowd of 4,130 saw BGSU post a 63-53 win over Xavier in the School Day contest (Dec. 6, 2018).
MY BABY TAKES THE MORNING TRAIN
For the Falcons, Tuesday's game is the first of four morning tipoffs this season, including three in a four-game span. The Falcons' game on Sunday (Nov. 25), vs. Mercer in BG's second contest in the Coastal Carolina Tournament, is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start.
Then, BGSU heads to Cincinnati to face Xavier in another 11:30 a.m. start on Thursday, Nov. 29. Â Additionally, the Falcons' Jan. 9 contest at Ball State has been moved to an 11:00 a.m. tipoff.
KATE THE GREAT
Tuesday marks the return of a BGSU great to the Stroh Center. Loyola coach Kate Achter was a driving force behind some of the most successful teams in BGSU women's basketball history. She helped the Falcons to four MAC regular-season titles, three MAC Tournament crowns and four national postseason appearances during her four years in the Orange and Brown. Achter was one-half of a 2008 senior class that went 108-23 overall and 57-7 in MAC regular-season play.
Achter still ranks fifth in BGSU history in scoring, with 1,580 career points, and is the Falcons' all-time leader in assists, with 688. She is the only player in school history with over 1,000 points and 600 assists. Achter, the 2008 MAC Player of the Year, also holds the school records for free throws made (551) and attempted (718) in a career.
She was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team three times in her four years, including in 2005, when she earned league tourney MVP honors. Two months ago, in her first year of eligibility, Achter was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
LAST TIME OUT: HEMPFLING'S LAST-SECOND LAYUP LIFTS BG PAST RMU
Freshman Kadie Hempfling's reverse layup with 1.0 seconds remaining lifted the Falcons to a 61-60 win over Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 17) at the Stroh Center. Hempfling's bucket marked the only time the Falcons led in the second half. The Falcons had trailed by as many as nine points late in the third quarter.
Junior Andrea Cecil led all players with 20 points, while freshman Morgan McMillen had 13. Cecil was 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, while McMillen hit three long-distance shots and had three assists and four steals. Hempfling had six points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Colonials got 16 points from Megan Callahan, while Esther Castedo had 14 off the bench.
BGSU trailed by five points before sophomore Sierra Thompson scored inside with 1:10 remaining. The Falcons forced a miss at the other end, and the ball went out of bounds to BG (after a video review) with 41.4 seconds to go.
The ensuing possession saw senior Sydney Lambert hit a pull-up, foul-line jumper with 19.6 seconds left, cutting BG's deficit to a single point, 60-59.
RMU called a timeout, the last for either team, and BG quickly committed a pair of fouls after attempting to steal the inbounds pass. The latter foul sent Callahan to the free-throw line for the Colonials. She missed both of her shots, but Nia Adams grabbed the rebound for the visitors, and was quickly fouled.
Adams, however, missed both of her shots from the stripe, and Thompson rebounded. The Falcons headed upcourt, and McMillen drove toward the bucket, but her layup try was blocked by Nneka Ezeigbo. As she was falling out of bounds, Ezeigbo tried to save the ball to a teammate. Hempfling, however, grabbed it and quickly flipped the ball up and in with 1.0 seconds to go. Then, RMU's long inbounds pass was intercepted by McMillen near midcourt as time ran out.
EYASSES
In both the Michigan State and Marshall games, a total of 11 players saw action for the Falcons. And, in both cases, that group included one senior, two juniors, four sophomores and four true freshmen.
Then, on Saturday vs. Robert Morris, 10 different players saw action, and that group included the four frosh, four sophs, one junior and one senior.
THE FALCONS: A QUICK OVERVIEW
BGSU enters the Loyola game with a record of 2-1 on the young season. The Falcons, after dropping a 99-69 decision at Michigan State in the season opener, picked up a 99-76 win over Marshall in the home opener, then captured a 61-60 victory against Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon.
BGSU returned a total of 10 letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team that finished with an 11-19 overall record and a 3-15 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons went 6-8 at the Stroh Center, 4-11 in road games and 1-0 in neutral-site contests a year ago.
Head coach Robyn Fralick is in her first season on the BGSU bench. Her staff includes associate head coach Kim Cameron, assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Karmen Graham, assistant coach Joel Whymer, director of operations Monique Rosati and video coordinator Amanda Cutcher.
The Falcons are 2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road this season to date.
Three games into the schedule, three Falcons are scoring in double digits. Freshman Morgan McMillen has 20.7 points per game, and is shooting 45.2 percent from three-point range, having gone 14-for-31 from the arc. McMillen tied the school single-game record with eight triples vs. Marshall.
Junior Andrea Cecil has 16.3 ppg to rank second on the team, and she is also second on the Falcons in rebounding, with 7.0 boards per game. Cecil, who had game-high totals of 19 points at Michigan State and 20 vs. Marshall, is shooting 56.3% from three-point land, having hit 9-of-16 long-distance attempts. Sophomore Angela Perry, who missed the MSU game due to injury, has 13.5 points per game after obliterating her previous career scoring high in the Marshall game.Â
Senior Sydney Lambert is averaging 9.7 ppg and leads the team with 5.0 assists per contest. Sophomore Madisen Parker and freshman Kadie Hempfling each have 5.7 ppg to date. Hempfling has a BG-best 11 rebounds per outing, and she ranks second on the team with 4.0 assists per contest. Parker has hit 5-of-9 shots from three-point range (55.6%).

Cecil, Caterrion Thompson and Jane Uecker each enter their junior season, while Alyssa Dean and Clare Glowniak are the redshirt sophs. Dean, a transfer from Memphis, will be eligible following the conclusion of the fall semester.
The sophomore class includes Parker, Perry, Terri Battle and Sierra Thompson, while Hempfling, McMillen, Molly Dever and Sydney Palermo make up the freshman class.
Lambert is the Falcons' top returning scorer, having averaged 9.9 points per game last winter. She also leads the returnees in assists (1.9 apg) and steals (1.5 spg), and ranks second in rebounding (3.6 rpg) among that group. The guard averaged 32.1 minutes per game and hit a team-high 60 three-pointers in 2017-18.
Cecil averaged 8.8 points and 5.0 boards last year, while Caterrion Thompson had 6.3 ppg and knocked down 34 three-pointers. Cecil is the top returning rebounder, while Thompson led the Falcons in three-point accuracy (41.5%) a year ago.
Lambert started all 30 contests last year, while Cecil and Uecker made 24 and 13 starts, respectively. Perry started nine games, Glowniak eight and Caterrion Thompson six.
ANDREA THREE-CIL
Junior Andrea Cecil scored a game-high 19 points in the Michigan State contest, hitting a career-high four three-point field goals in the process. Cecil went 4-for-6 from the arc.
Then, just two games later, Cecil matched her career best from long range, again going 4-for-6 from three-point land in the win over Robert Morris. She had a game-high 20 points vs. the Colonials.
SYD-THREE LAMBERT
As last season wound down, Sydney Lambert rapidly moved up the BGSU list for career three-point field goals made. Entering the Loyola game, Lambert now has hit 191 long-distance shots in her career, and is ranked fourth in school history.
Lambert's next target on that list is third-place Liz Honegger (216 from 2003-07). Lambert is on pace to finish her career ranked second all-time in three-pointers made at BGSU.
A QUICK LOOK AT LOYOLA
Loyola, like BGSU, is 2-1 on the young season. The Ramblers have bounced back from a season-opening loss at Youngstown State to post wins over Detroit Mercy and UIC. The latter victory was a 15-point win on the road on Saturday night. Ellie Rice and Tiara Wallace each have 12.0 points per game, and Wallace also has a team-high 6.7 rebounds per contest. Two of their teammates have 10.3 ppg apiece.
A year ago, head coach Kate Achter's team went 7-23 overall and 5-13 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Ramblers returned seven letterwinners, including three starters, from that club.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Loyola, 2-0, in the all-time series, and both previous meetings came in the 1988 calendar year. The teams' first meeting came in late January of that year, and was a rare non-conference matchup during BGSU's Mid-American Conference schedule. The Brown and Orange posted a 91-61 win at venerable Anderson Arena. Then, just 10 months later, BGSU journeyed to the Windy City and came away with a 93-92 overtime win. Falcon legend Jackie Motycka led a balanced attack with 16 points in the home win, and had 31 points in the road victory. Both of those BGSU teams (1987-88 and '88-89) won the MAC and advanced to the NCAA Championships under coach Fran Voll.
BGSU-LOYOLA TIES
Head coach Kate Achter is not the only member of the Loyola athletic department with BGSU ties. Director of Athletics Steve Watson is a BGSU alum, and played two years on the men's basketball team for coach Jim Larranaga. Watson graduated from BGSU in 1990.
And, Loyola Senior Associate AD for External Operations Tom Sorboro is also a BGSU grad, earning his degree from the University in 1992. Sorboro, a men's basketball manager while at BG, was an assistant coach at several schools including Michigan upon graduation from the University.
UP NEXT
Following the Loyola matchup, the Falcons will head to Conway, S.C., to play a pair of games in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. BGSU will meet the host school on Friday (Nov. 23), before taking on Mercer two days later (Nov. 25).
Then, the Falcons will play road games vs. Xavier (Nov. 29) and Canisius (Dec. 8). BGSU's next home game is Monday, Dec. 17, when Detroit Mercy comes to the Stroh.
