Hempfling's Last-Second Layup Lifts BG Past RMU, 61-60
November 17, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Falcon freshman scores with 1.0 second to go
Freshman Kadie Hempfling's reverse layup with 1.0 seconds remaining lifted the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to a 61-60 win over Robert Morris University on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 17) at the Stroh Center.
Hempfling's bucket marked the only time the Falcons (2-1) led in the entire second half. The Falcons had trailed by as many as nine points late in the third quarter.
Junior Andrea Cecil led all players with 20 points, while freshman Morgan McMillen had 13. Cecil was 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, on the afternoon, while McMillen hit three long-distance shots and had three assists and four steals.
Hempfling had six points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Colonials (1-3) got 16 points from Megan Callahan, while Esther Castedo had 14 off the bench.
BGSUÂ trailed by five points before sophomore Sierra Thompson scored inside with 1:10 remaining. The Falcons forced a Robert Morris miss at the other end, and the ball went out of bounds with 41.4 seconds to go. Initially, the ball was awarded to the Colonials, but after a video review and lengthy discussion, the call was reversed and it was BG ball.
The ensuing possession saw senior Sydney Lambert hit a pull-up, foul-line jumper with 19.6 seconds left, cutting BG's deficit to a single point, 60-59.
RMU called a timeout, the last for either team, and BG quickly committed a pair of fouls after attempting to steal the inbounds pass. The latter foul sent Callahan to the free-throw line for the Colonials. She missed both of her shots, but Nia Adams grabbed the rebound for the visitors, and was quickly fouled.
Adams, however, missed both of her shots from the stripe, and Thompson rebounded the ball. She passed it to Cecil, who quickly dribbled to near midcourt before flipping it to McMillen.
McMillen drove toward the bucket, but her layup try was blocked by Nneka Ezeigbo. As she was falling out of bounds, Ezeigbo tried to save the ball to a teammate. Hempfling, however, grabbed it and quickly flipped the ball up and in with 1.0 seconds to go. Then, RMU's long inbounds pass was intercepted by McMillen near midcourt as time ran out.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons, as mentioned, led for only one second – the final second – after halftime. Robert Morris took the lead on a Esther Castedo three-pointer with 1:50 to go in the first half, and BG trailed from that point until freshman Kadie Hempfling's game-winning layup.
• BGSU led for a total of 8:09 on Saturday afternoon, including 8:08 in the first half.
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Neithe team scored for over two and a half minutes to start the game. Sophomore Angela Perry's putback got the Falcons on the board at the 7:26 mark, and Megan Callahan responded with a three-pointer for the visitors with exactly three minutes elapsed.
• The visitors sandwiched triples by Nina Augustin and Callahan around a long-range make by junior Andrea Cecil, and when Callahan made her third trey (and her team's fourth) in a span of under two minutes, the Colonials had a 12-5 lead.
• Freshman Morgan McMillen came right back with a trey of her own, and after Nneka Ezeigbo hit a jumper with 4:24 on the clock, BG scored the last eight points of the period.
• Cecil hit a layup, and sophomore Madisen Parker knocked down a triple with 44 seconds left in the period. When Cecil drilled a trey in the final seconds of the quarter, the game was tied at 16-16.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The hosts took the lead on redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak's three-point play on the first possession of the quarter, and moments later, freshman Kadie Hempfling's three-pointer gave the Falcons a 22-18 lead.
• Cecil hit a layup, and the junior then knocked down a long-distance shot to give BG a nine-point lead, the home team's largest of the game. BG's run was 19-4, and the Falcons' lead was 27-18 with 6:20 on the clock.
• RMU scored the next six point, and after McMillen hit a pair of free throws, an Esther Castedo three-ball cut BG's lead to two. A free throw by Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu was followed by a Nadege Pluviose layup, and suddenly, the visitors had a 12-2 run and a 30-29 lead.
• Cecil was fouled and hit a pair of shots from the stripe, but another Castedo triple began a 7-0 run for the Colonials. Cecil hit two more tosses in the final second of the half to cut the RMU lead to 37-33 at the break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Back-to-back buckets, by Callahan and Pluviose, extened the visitors' lead to 41-33, but Cecil hit a triple in transition, and Glowniak scored inside. A Hempfling free throw got the Falcons within two points, but the visitors extended the lead back out to six with 3:49 left in the quarter.
• After McMillen made a pair of shots at the line, Augustin's three-pointer gave RMU a 50-43 lead. Castedo's free throws gave the visitors a nine-point advantage with 1:55 remaining, before Cecil's fourth triple of the day cut BG's deficit to 52-46 after 30 minutes.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Ezeigbo's jumper gave RMU an eight-point lead, but sophomore Sierra Thompson responded with a layup, and freshman Molly Dever split a pair of free throws just over a minute later, cutting the visitors' lead to 54-49.
• McMillen hit a three-pointer, and after Callahan answered from long range, McMillen came up with a steal and banked home a triple try, making it a 57-55 game with 4:33 to go.
• Then, however, neither team scored for nearly two minutes. When Pluviose hit a long-distance try with 2:37 remaining, the visitors had a five-point lead.
• BG missed a shot, but Sierra Thompson came up with a steal, and the sophomore made a layup on the ensuing possession to cut the RMU lead to 60-57 with just over a minute to go.
• The Falcosn forced a Pluviose miss, and after the ball went out of bounds and was awarded to BGSU upon review, senior Sydney Lambert hit her pull-up jumper to set the stage for the final frantic seconds.
