Ackon, Baeron Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
November 05, 2018 | General, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's soccer player Ebenezer Ackon and women's soccer player Elisa Baeron.
Male Athlete of the Week
Ebenezer Ackon, a senior from Cape Coast, Ghana, was stellar at both ends of the field in the Falcons' dominant 2-0 win over SIUE. With the victory, BGSU secured the second seed for the Mid-American Conference Tournament. After a 1-5-2 start to the season, BGSU is 5-1-2 in the last eight matches. On Senior Night, Ackon was part of a BG back line that limited the Cougars (9-3-4 overall entering the match) to just one shot on goal all night. Ackon, who played all 90 minutes, scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season on a header with just 13 seconds remaining in the half, giving BG a 1-0 lead at the break.
Female Athlete of the Week
Elisa Baeron, a senior from Sefsingen, Lower Saxony, Germany, was named the Mid-American Conference Tournament MVP as Bowling Green won the league tourney title. Baeron, who arrived at BGSU mere months after the Falcons had completed a winless 2013 campaign, converted her penalty kick in the sixth round of the PK phase against Ball State, giving BG the title. Baeron had two shot attempts during the match, both coming in overtime. Her first shot was saved by the BSU 'keeper during a surreal sequence in which the Falcons fired off four shots in four seconds during the first OT session. Then, she hit the post with a shot in the second OT period, before converting the walk-off PK moments later. The MAC Tournament title is the third in program history, and the first since 2005.
