Falcons Down UDM, 79-73, to Remain Unbeaten at the Stroh
December 17, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Cecil scores a career-high 30 points to lead a multitude of contributors
Junior Andrea Cecil scored a career-high 30 points, and senior point guard Sydney Lambert went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line down the stretch as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team defeated the University of Detroit Mercy, 79-73, Monday night (Dec. 17). The eventful non-conference game was held at the Stroh Center.
Cecil had a double-double for the Falcons (5-4), as she was one of three players to pull down 11 rebounds on the night. Freshman Morgan McMillen scored 16 points and Lambert added 15 for the hosts. Lambert also had eight rebounds and eight assists in the win.
Redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak and freshman Kadie Hempfling each had 11 boards as well, as the Falcons owned a 46-33 advantage on the glass. McMillen and Cecil each knocked down four three-point tries on the night, as the Falcons hit 13 long-range shots in a school-record 40 attempts.
Lexey Tobel had 19 points to lead three double-digit scorers for the Titans. Zoey Oatis added 17 points and Jiera Shears 16 for the visitors.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons had 23 assists on 25 baskets. All six players who saw more than five minutes of action had at least one assist, with five of those six handing out two or more.
• Two BGSU players dished out eight assists apiece, as senior Sydney Lambert set a career best in that category, while freshman Kadie Hempfling had eight helpers for the second time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons burst out to a 16-2 lead, as the Titans had used two timeouts before the game was five minutes old. BGSU hit four three-point field goals during that stretch, and freshman Morgan McMillen scored 11 of her team's 16 points in the game's opening 4:11.
• The lead fluctuated between nine and 14 points for the remainder of the half, and junior Andrea Cecil's three-point play late in the second period gave the home team a 37-24 lead at the intermission.
• The Falcons and Titans traded scores to begin the third quarter, but a Cecil three-pointer gave the Brown and Orange an 18-point lead, the largest of the night, early in that period.
• The visitors went on a 9-2 run late in the quarter to cut BG's lead to single digits, at 56-47, and BG took a 12-point advantage into the final period.
• The Falcons went ahead by 13 points midway through that fourth quarter, as a triple by senior Sydney Lambert put the home team up by a 71-58 score, but the Titans then went on a 10-0 run, as Lexey Tobel's layup with 1:50 remaining cut BG's lead to just three points.
• Cecil was fouled and split a pair of free throws with 1:30 on the clock, but Tobel put back her own miss to cut the BG advantage to 72-70. Then, the Falcons missed a three-point attempt and the Titans rebounded the ball as the clock ticked under a minute. For the first time since the game's opening minute, UDM had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead.
• But, freshman Molly Dever – who did not play in the game's first 35-plus minutes – knocked the ball away from UDM's Brittney Jackson near midcourt. Dever and several Titan players went to the ground for the loose ball, and the first-year Falcon came up with the ball and was fouled with 43.9 seconds left.
• Dever made her first free-throw attempt, but missed the second. But, Cecil came up with the offensive board, and got the ball to Lambert, who was fouled with 37.8 seconds remaining.
• Lambert made both of her free-throw tries, and after Tobel knocked down a shot from the arc with 25.7 seconds to go, Lambert was fouled again. Again, the senior stepped to the line and hit both shots to give the Falcons a four-point lead.
• BG forced a miss, and Dever grabbed the rebound and found Lambert, who again was fouled. The senior made her fifth and sixth free throws in a row to cap the scoring with 8.2 seconds to go.Â
INDIVIDUAL NOTES AND NUMBERS

• The Falcons turned the ball over 14 times, while UDM had only seven. The Titans came up with 10 steals, including five by Zoey Oatis.
