BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department invites all fans and community members to join us at the Sebo Athletic Center at Doyt Perry Stadium Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. to wish redshirt senior Aliyah Gustafson luck as she represents the Falcons at this year's NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Gustafson will head to College Station, Texas, where she is slated to compete in the shot put event on Friday, March 9, at 6:15 p.m. ET.
The Falcons finished the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with the best team finish since 1999 behind Gustafson's strong performances in weight throw and shot put. She earned the second MAC title of her career when she threw the shot put 16.76m (54-feet-11.5). While placing atop the pack in shot put, Gustafson also found herself on the podium for weight throw, finishing second overall. She set a new school record in the event as well, throwing a distance of 21.11m (69-feet-3.25). Following the weekend, she was named first team All-MAC for her outstanding shot put performance.
Gustafson was ranked among the nation's leaders throughout the 2018 indoor track and field season in the shot put. She enters the national championships as the No. 8 seed among the 16 competitors in the field. She is the only Mid-American Conference student-athlete to qualify in the shot put.
The last time the Falcons were represented at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships was in 2001 when Stephanie Heldt competed in the high jump. This will be Gustafson's first trip to the indoor championships, having previously competed in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in 2016, where she finished 24th overall.
