February 09, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the NCAA D-I Cross Country Team All-Academic Awards from the 2017 cross country season this morning (Feb. 9, 2018), naming the Bowling Green State University men's and women's teams among some of the top in the nation. The honor is given to teams that show exemplary success both on and off the field. This year, 195 men's teams and 228 women's teams were named.
The Falcons' men's squad was named in a tie for fourth, finishing the fall semester with an average team grade point average of 3.60. The team also sits atop the Mid-American Conference for the All-Academic Award, leading the conference by 0.17 grade points. This is the third consecutive year in which the team has found itself among the top-five nationally, topping the list last year and being named second in 2015. The team has also led the MAC in this honor over the past three seasons.
The women's team also ranked fairly high, in a tie for 11th out of 228 total squads honored. They finished the fall semester with an average team GPA of 3.73, second in the MAC, only behind Akron.
In seven years under Coach Lou Snelling, both teams have continuously been at the top of their conference academically. Since 2011, the men's squad has led the MAC in GPA five times and finished second the other two years. The women's team has fared similarly, finishing atop the rankings in three of the past four years.
At the conclusion of the 2017 cross country season, thirteen Falcons were named to the Academic All-MAC team, including eight men and five women. Four athletes were also named MAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes.
