Five Falcons Named To Academic All-MAC Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference has announced that five Bowling Green State University baseball student-athletes have been named to the 2018 Academic All-MAC Team. The announcement was made on Thursday (June 14).

The Falcons continue to place more and more student-athletes on the team. Following the 2017 campaign, four Falcons earned Academic All-MAC honors.

"It is not easy to be a student-athlete, especially with all of the traveling that our team does during the season," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "I am very proud of the work that these young man have put forward in the classroom. They are great representatives of our program."

The Academic All-MAC honor is bestowed upon student-athletes that have excelled in both athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Zac Carey, Bowling Green, Sr., 3.948 GPA, Exercise Science
Joe McGuinness, Bowling Green, Jr., 3.728 GPA, Middle Childhood Education
Wes Rickenberg, Bowling Green, Sr., 3.869 GPA, Middle Childhood Education
Chandler Stillings, Bowling Green, So., 3.532 GPA, Finance
Jake Wilson, Bowling Green, So., 3.518 GPA, Pre-Exercise Science

Senior right-handed pitcher Zac Carey, the department's Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2018, earns the honor for the third-consecutive season, which is the max amount of honors a player can receive, given that freshmen and first-year players are not eligible. Junior catcher Joe McGuinness, who was the department's Junior Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2018, earned Academic All-MAC honors for the second-straight season.

Senior right-handed pitcher Wes Rickenberg, sophomore left-handed pitcher Chandler Stillings, and sophomore outfielder Jake Wilson were placed on the team for the first time in their Falcon careers.
