August 17, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Redshirt sophomore scores in her first game as a Falcon
Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox found the back of the net in her Bowling Green State University women's soccer debut, as the Falcons battled Loyola Marymount University to a 1-1, double-overtime draw on Friday (Aug. 17) in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The match, the opening contest of the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff, was held at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Lions got on the scoreboard with just five minutes gone, but junior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve and the Falcon defense held LMU scoreless for the final 105 minutes of the match. Cox tied the score at the 49:55 mark, and the teams then battled through 40-plus minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime without another goal.
The Falcons had a 9-6 advantage in total shot attempts. Both Duwve and her counterpart, LMU goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt, made two saves.
QUOTING COACH FANNON
"It's a strange feeling walking away from a game like this. We started really slowly against a team we knew would be very strong, but once we settled down, the game changed and we ended up feeling very disappointed that we didn't win."
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 5' | With just over four minutes elapsed, a shot by LMU's Emma Tyrnauer hit the post. It was the first shot of the match for either team.
• 6' | GOAL | With exactly five minutes gone, Sarina Bolden's header got the Lions on the board.
• 14' | Redshirt sophomore Rachel Muller hit the post with a shot at the 13:28 mark. Muller was seeing her first regular-season action since 2016, having missed all of the '17 campaign due to injury.
• 26' | Duwve made her first save of the night, stopping an effort from LMU's Dana Reed.
• 45' | Neither team was credited with a shot attempt over the final 19-plus minutes of the half, and the Lions took a one-goal lead into the intermission.
