UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team opens the home portion of the 2018 regular-season schedule this weekend. Head coach Matt Fannon and the Falcons will face Oakland University on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 25). Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m., and admission is free to all BGSU home regular-season soccer matches.
HOME COOKING
• The Falcons will be looking to continue the success enjoyed by the 2017 team at Cochrane Stadium. Last year, BGSU posted a 7-2-0 record at home, the team's best home record in nearly a decade (since the 2008 team went 8-1-1 at Cochrane).
• BGSU's total of seven home wins last fall was tied for the second highest in school history. The '08 team, obviously, holds the record, while the 2005 (7-2-2) and '06 (7-5-0) teams, like the 2017 club, won seven matches at home.
• The Falcons enter Saturday's match having won five-straight games at Cochrane Stadium. The school record for consecutive home wins is seven, set by the 2008 team. The program's longest home unbeaten streak is 11 matches (9-0-2), from September of '08 to September of '09.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons are 0-1-1 on the young season, after playing a pair of overtime matches in Hawai'i last weekend. BGSU tied Loyola Marymount, 1-1, on Friday (Aug. 17) before falling to host UH, 1-0 in OT, two days later.
• Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox scored BG's lone goal of the weekend. Junior Kathleen Duwve made a total of 12 saves, including 10 vs. Hawai'i. Redshirt senior Erica Hubert was named to the all-tournament team.
• Head coach Matt Fannon and his staff – assistant coaches Cian McDonald, Dan Ball and Erin Kielmeyer – welcome back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's team. BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, and the Falcons placed second in the MAC's East Division.
• The Falcons were the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference a year ago, with a four-game improvement over the 2016 season. BGSU's turnaround tied the team for 28th in the country in that department.
• The Falcons' total of 13 victories a year ago was the second-highest in school history, while BG's six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008.
• Fannon was voted the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year, and the Brown and Orange had four All-MAC Team selections. Two of those four return, as Hubert was one of three Falcons to earn all-league first-team honors a season ago, while Alexis Fricke was named to the all-conference second team.
• Nikhita Jacob was named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team last November. Hubert, Fricke and Jacob are joined by returning starters Morgan Abbitt, Victoria Cope, Maureen Kennedy and Jennifer Reyes.
• Hubert led the team with 12 goals a year ago, as seven of the top-10 scorers return from a 2017 club that set the school single-season record for goals scored.
• Kennedy tied the BGSU single-season mark with 10 assists, while Cope and Duwve combined to start all 21 matches in goal in '17.
• Fannon and Company welcomed 10 newcomers to the 2018 roster. That group includes nine true freshmen as well as Cox, a transfer. Cox, who spent two seasons at UNC Wilmington, is a redshirt sophomore with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
• And, speaking of those newcomers...
NEW FACES
• A number of newcomers made their respective BGSU debuts last weekend in Hawai'i. Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox was in the starting lineup for both matches, and scored a goal in the opener vs. Loyola Marymount.
• Freshman Alexis Miller joined Cox in the starting XI vs. LMU, while fellow frosh Emilie Reese, Mackenzie Reuber and Lynsey Spotts all saw action off the bench.
• In the Hawai'i match, a total of 22 players saw action, including each of the five aforementioned newcomers. Cox and Miller each made their second consecutive starts, while Reuber was in the starting lineup for her first time as a Falcon.
• And, freshmen Zoe Hudson and Ruby Linton each made their respective collegiate debuts vs. the Rainbow Wahine.
THE 2018 CAPTAINS
• Seniors Morgan Abbitt and Erica Hubert and redshirt junior Victoria Cope are the captains of the 2018 Falcons.
FALCONS PICKED TO PLACE THIRD IN MAC
• The Falcons have been picked to place third in the MAC race in 2018. The preseason poll, the result of voting by the conference's 12 head coaches, was released by the league office on Aug. 15.
• The Falcons received two first-place votes in the poll, and BG's total of 114 points trailed only Kent State (134) and Ball State (119).
• In 2017, BGSU was picked to finish sixth (i.e., last) in the MAC's East Division in the preseason poll, but the Falcons proceeded to finish second in the East before advancing all the way to the championship match of the MAC Tournament.
• After eight years of two six-team divisions, the MAC has eliminated divisions for the sport of women's soccer beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
WORKING OVERTIME
• Each of the Falcons' matches last weekend, as mentioned, went to overtime. BGSU played a total of three OT matches in each of the last three seasons, and the Falcons had not played back-to-back overtime contests since October of 2014.
• BGSU now has an all-time record of 21-29-39 in overtime matches.
SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE BROWN AND ORANGE FOR YOUR BROADCAST, WEB STREAM, ARTICLE OR MYSPACE PAGE
• The 2018 season marks the 22nd year of BGSU women's soccer. The Falcons have a winning percentage of .404 in MAC regular-season matches since the inception of the program in 1997, but BGSU ranks third among MAC schools with a .620 winning pct. in MAC Tournament matches.
• Matt Fannon, now in his second season at BG, is the fifth coach in the history of Falcon women's soccer. He joins Tom Piccirillo (1997-99), Andy Richards (2000-11), Kellie Evans (2012 - interim coach) and Lindsay Basalyga (2013-16) on that list.
• Fannon – the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year – led the Falcons to a second-place finish in the MAC's East Division a year ago. BGSU then advanced all the way to the championship game of the conference tournament.
• The trip to the final marked BGSU's sixth MAC Tournament championship-game appearance in program history. The Falcons are tied for second in the league in that category, as only Miami (seven trips to the final) and Western Michigan (six) have matched or bettered BG's total.
• BGSU qualified for the MAC Tournament just twice during the first five years of the program, before making the tourney in seven-straight seasons from 2002-08. The Falcons advanced to at least the semifinal round in six of those seven years.
• The Falcons have had a knack for pulling off upset victories in the MAC Tournament over the years. BGSU was seeded either seventh or eighth for the league tourney in 2000, 2003 and 2004, but advanced to the MAC Tournament's championship match in all three seasons, winning the title in the latter year.
• That 2004 MAC Tournament title was the first in program history. Then, in 2005, BGSU captured both the regular-season and tournament crowns, winning the league tourney title at Cochrane Stadium.
• After making the MAC Tournament in seven-straight years, BG then went eight years in a row (2009-16) without qualifying. The Falcons, as mentioned earlier, returned to the league tournament last season, downing Buffalo and upsetting top-seeded Kent State to advance to the final.
HUBERT WATCH
• Redshirt senior Erica Hubert has proven to be a potent offensive threat for the Falcons every time she takes the field. Hubert enters the Oakland match with a career total of 59 points, including 27 goals, for the Orange and Brown
• Hubert currently is tied for third on the BGSU list for career goals. Her next goal will tie her with Samantha Meister (2002-05) for second place on that chart.
• With 59 points, Hubert is ranked fifth on that school list. She needs five points to match her former teammate, Skylar Fleak (2014-17), for fourth place, and Hubert is just six points shy of third-place Jill Conover (1999-2002).
• Hubert has scored eight career match-winning goals, tying her for third on that BG list. She is just one behind second-place Corbie Yee (2005-08).
• Kristy Coppes (2001-04) owns all three school records, with 52 goals (including 14 match winners) and 111 points during her four years with the Falcons. The top-10 lists can be found on page 7 of these notes.
KENNEDY WATCH
• Junior Maureen Kennedy tied the school single-season record with 10 assists a year ago. She enters the Oakland match with a total of 14 career assists, tying her for 10th on that BGSU list.
THE OPPONENT
• Oakland is 0-2-0 after losses at UMKC (2-1) and Kansas State (4-0) last weekend. Head coach Juan Pablo Favero welcomed back 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club that went 4-14-2 overall and 3-6-0 in the Horizon League.
THE SERIES
• BGSU trails Oakland, 3-1-1, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Falcons' lone win came in last season's opener, as Skylar Fleak scored four times en route to a 5-1 BG victory.  OU has won each of the two prior meetings at Cochrane.
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW FINAL FALCON FUTBOL FACTS)
• On the Hawai'i trip, redshirt sophomore Rachel Muller saw her first action since the 2016 campaign. Muller earned the start vs. LMU after missing the entire 2017 season due to injury. The made 11 starts as a true freshman in '16.
• Junior Kathleen Duwve made a total of eight saves during all of last season. In 2018, she had matched that total by halftime of the season's second match. After stopping two shots vs. Loyola Marymount on Friday, Duwve made six saves during the first half of the Hawai'i contest. She ended the night with totals of 10 saves in the match and 12 on the year.
• The double-digit save total was the fourth of Duwve's BGSU career.
• Against UH, the Falcons were shut out for just the second time in 23 matches since Matt Fannon was named head coach. BG was blanked only once last year, vs. Butler (Aug. 27, 2017).
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Oakland contest, the Falcons will hit the road to face Valparaiso next weekend. BG battles the Crusaders on Friday, Aug. 31, in a 7:30 p.m. start. Then, the Brown and Orange will host Xavier on Thursday, Sept. 6, in a 5:00 p.m. first touch. As mentioned, admission to all BGSU soccer regular-season home matches is free.
