BG Bests Ball State, 3-0, Behind Washington's Brace
September 23, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Falcons move to 2-0-0 in the MAC
For the second time in as many Mid-American Conference matches, junior Chelsee Washington got her team on the board early, and they never looked back. Washington scored a pair of goals on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23), leading the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory against Ball State University at the Briner Sports Complex.
With the win, the Falcons are now 4-3-2 overall and 2-0-0 in MAC play. BGSU has won three-straight matches, and the Falcons are unbeaten (3-0-1) in the last four contests.
Ball State drops to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the MAC.
After scoring less than two minutes into Friday's 2-0 win at Miami, Washington found the back of the net at the 3:09 mark on Sunday. She added a second goal with just over 10 minutes to go in the opening half, and senior Erica Hubert put an exclamation point on the win with a goal in the last five minutes of the match.
In addition to the three goals, the Falcons hit the woodwork with two other shots.
Junior Kathleen Duwve made four saves in net, as the Falcon defense picked up a third consecutive shutout.
BGSU is now a perfect 17-0-0 when scoring two or more goals since Matt Fannon became the Falcons' head coach prior to the 2017 season.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• BGSU has gotten off to a 2-0-0 start in MAC play for the first time since 2010, and only the fifth time in program history. The Falcons also began the conference schedule with two wins in 1999, 2000 and 2006.
• The 2018 team is only the second to begin the league slate with a pair of road wins. The 2000 club picked up victories at Central Michigan and Toledo to kick off the conference campaign.
QUOTING COACH FANNON
"Today we showed how hard we have worked at getting the details right. We stuck to the game plan well, and had great composure in all the big moments. It was an excellent team performance that we now have to back up every day to continue growing, so we can challenge for the conference."
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 4' | GOAL | Freshman Mackenzie Reuber made a nice spin move along the right sideline to get around a BSU defender, and she played a diagonal ball to senior Erica Hubert in the box. Hubert trapped it down into the patch of junior Chelsee Washington. From just outside the 18-yard box, at the top of the circle, Washington hit a blast that found the lower left corner of the net. BSU goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville made a diving effort, but the shot was perfectly placed, going just past Stuteville's outstretched fingertips and just inside the goalpost.
• 8' | Senior Alexis Fricke broke up a potential BSU 2-on-1 break, cutting in front of one of the strikers to chest the ball down and clear it out of the BG penalty area.
• 11' | Hubert and sophomore Nikki Cox worked a combination play at midfield. Hubert played a return pass to Cox as they headed downfield, but an entry ball by Cox was just out of reach of senior Marissa Swindell, and Stuteville picked it up.
• 15' | A long ball was played ahead to BSU's Lauren Roll, but her shot on the left side of the box went well high.
• 16' | A left-side diagonal ball was headed on target by BSU's Amanda Shaw, but Duwve grabbed the shot out of the air.
• 19' | BGSU mounted a counterattack as Hubert made a long run, worked a give-and-go play with Cox and fired a shot from a tough angle on the right side of the box. But, the shot went just over the bar.
• 22' | The Cardinals put a free kick into the box. It was knocked out to Allison Abbe who hit a shot, but the roller was sent directly to Duwve who made the easy save.
• 34' | With BGSU on the move, junior Kristin Tveit found Washington, who hit a shot from outside the box that was deflected out for a corner kick.
• 35' | GOAL | And, off that corner by junior Maureen Kennedy, chaos ensues in the box as multiple players had a crack at the ball. Freshman Lynsey Spotts got her head on it, but Stuteville parried it away. But, Washington leaped for a header that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced behind the goal line.
• 38' | POST| Spotts took a pass and blasted a shot from distance. The shot beat Stuteville, but rang off the post. Tveit got a piece of the long rebound, and the ball wound up at the feet of Washington, but her shot was wide.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 46' | BSU made a counterattack, and as Abbe entered the box, she hit a shot/cross that sailed past the far post.
• 49' | POST | Off of a Hubert corner, Washington's hard header hit the post, and a follow-up shot was deflected out for another corner.
• 50 ' | The ensuing corner saw Washington again get her head on the ball. This time, she sent her shot toward the far post, but it was knocked away by a defender on the goal line for a 'team save.'
• 52' | A throw-in by senior Jennifer Reyes found Cox, who in turn got the ball to Hubert with a cheeky backheel. Hubert played a cross toward Spotts, but the assistant referee's flag was raised, indicating an offside call on one of the Falcons.
• 60' | Spotts was fouled near midfield, and Kennedy played a long free kick into the box, toward sophomore Nikhita Jacob on the far side. Again, though, an offside call whistled the play dead.
• 61' | Hubert sent Spotts into the box, but her shot from the left side was tipped out for a corner kick.
• 67' | The Falcons displayed some nifty ball movement, with Hubert, Reyes, Tveit and freshman Sarah Allen involved in the buildup. Allen's shot from just outside the box was blocked.
• 68' | At the other end, Julia Elvbo hit a hard shot from distance, arguably BSU's best chance to that point. But, Duwve made the stop, deflecting the ball into the air and catching it.
• 72' | BSU's Peighton Cook made a long run and hit a low shot from the top of the box, but it went just wide of the left post, and it appeared that Duwve had the post covered and would have blocked the shot had it been on target.
• 72' | Less than a minute later, the BSU 'keeper, Stuteville, came off of her line to block a shot by Allen on the right side of the box.
• 75' | The Falcons displayed some impressive movement. Allen won the ball at midfield & took off. She passed to Washington, who found sophomore Sophia Barnes out wide. The Barnes cross went past the goalmouth, but was saved on the end line by Allen, who found Tveit. Tveit knocked the ball back to Reyes, who hit a hard shot that was deflected out of play for a corner kick.
• 78' | Hubert got past a defender and uncorked a shot from just outside the 18, but it rolled wide of the far post.
• 84' | Hubert displayed great footwork to lose a defender, and the senior hit a hard shot on left side, but Stuteville made a nice save, and the rebound went just behind Barnes on the other side of the box.
• 86' | GOAL | Hubert capped the scoring, as her shot from the top of the 18 gave the Falcons a three-goal advantage.
STATISTICS
• The Falcons held advantages of 16-8 in total shot attempts, 7-4 in shots on goal and 7-5 in corner kicks.
• Junior Kathleen Duwve made four saves as the Falcons kept a third consecutive clean sheet. Tristin Stuteville had three saves for the Cardinals, who also had a 'team save' as a BG shot was blocked off the line by a defender.
