UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after seeing last week's lone match washed away, begins a busy September schedule with a pair of contests this week. Head coach Matt Fannon and the Falcons return home for a Thursday (Sept. 6) matchup with Xavier University. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and – as is the case with all home Falcon soccer regular-season action – admission is free.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will venture to Evanston, Ill., for a Sunday (Sept. 9) matchup with nationally-ranked Northwestern University. First touch between the Falcons and the No. 15 Wildcats is set for 2:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET) at NU's Martin Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: FALCONS, CRUSADERS WASHED AWAY
• The Falcons played a dominant first half at Valparaiso on Friday evening (Aug. 31), but in the end, Mother Nature emerged victorious as the match was cancelled due to thunderstorms. The Falcons had a 1-0 lead when the contest was halted for the final time with 6:39 remaining in the first half.
• Senior Marissa Swindell had scored the lone goal of the night, assisted by sophomore Sophia Barnes, but none of the statistics from the match will count.
• It is believed that three matches have been cancelled – all due to lightning – in the history of the BGSU women's soccer program. Two of those three cancellations have been games at Valparaiso. The Falcons and Crusaders also had a 2003 match cancelled. BG also saw a 2000 match at Wright State squashed due to storms.
TWO IS A MAGIC NUMBER
• The Falcons began the home schedule with a 3-0 win over Oakland (Aug. 25). BGSU has now scored two or more goals in 14 of the 24 matches since Matt Fannon became head coach prior to the 2017 season.
• In the Fannon Era, BGSU is a perfect 14-0-0 when scoring at least two goals, and the Falcons are 0-8-2 when being held to fewer than two goals.
HOME COOKING
• The Falcons' win over Oakland was a continuation of the success enjoyed by the 2017 team at Cochrane Stadium. Last year, BGSU posted a 7-2-0 record at home, the team's best home record in nearly a decade (since the 2008 team went 8-1-1 at Cochrane).
• BGSU's seven home wins last fall tied for the second-highest total in school history. The '08 team, obviously, holds the record, while the 2005 (7-2-2) and '06 (7-5-0) teams, like the 2017 club, won seven matches at home.
• The Falcons enter Thursday's Xavier match having won six-straight games at Cochrane Stadium. The school record for consecutive home wins is seven, set by the '08 team. The program's longest home unbeaten streak is 11 matches (9-0-2), from September of 2008 to September of '09.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons are 1-1-1 on the young season. After playing a pair of overtime matches in Hawai'i to open the campaign, BGSU topped Oakland, 3-0, at Cochrane Stadium (Aug. 25). Last Friday's scheduled match at Valparaiso was halted late in the first half due to lightning and was ultimately cancelled.
• In the OU match, redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox scored her second goal in three matches as a Falcon, while senior Erica Hubert and junior Maureen Kennedy also found the back of the net. Junior Kathleen Duwve was called upon to make just one save as she and the BG back line kept a clean sheet.
• Cox leads the Falcons with four points on the young season, while Hubert has three. Duwve has played every second in goal this season to date, and has 13 saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of just 0.61.Â
• Head coach Matt Fannon and his staff – assistant coaches Cian McDonald, Dan Ball and Erin Kielmeyer – welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's team. BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, and the Falcons placed second in the MAC's East Division.
• The Falcons were the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference a year ago, with a four-game improvement over the 2016 season. BGSU's turnaround tied the team for 28th in the country in that department.
• The Falcons' total of 13 victories a year ago was the second-highest in school history, while BG's six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008.
• Fannon was voted the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year, and the Brown and Orange had four All-MAC Team selections. Two of those four return, as Hubert was one of three Falcons to earn all-league first-team honors a season ago, while Alexis Fricke was named to the all-conference second team.
• Nikhita Jacob was named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team last November. Hubert, Fricke and Jacob are joined by returning starters Kennedy Morgan Abbitt, Victoria Cope and Jennifer Reyes.
• Hubert led the team with 12 goals in 2017, as seven of the top-10 scorers returned from a '17 club that set the school single-season record for goals scored.
• Kennedy tied the BGSU single-season mark with 10 assists, while Cope and Duwve combined to start all 21 matches in goal in '17.
THAT'S DEEP
• One hallmark of the 2018 Falcons, at least through the first three completed matches, is the depth that coach Matt Fannon and his staff have at their disposal. A total of 18 players saw action in the season opener vs. Loyola Marymount. Then, two days later, no fewer than 22 Falcons played against Hawai'i.
• In the home opener, 21 different players got on the field during the win over Oakland. A total of 19 Falcons have seen action in at least two of the three matches to date, and 15 players have made at least one start.
DUWVE CAN DO
• Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve earned her fifth career shutout in the win over Oakland. Duwve, who battled injuries and played in just three matches last season, already has topped her 2017 totals in minutes played and saves.
• This fall, Duwve has 13 saves, a save percentage of .867 and a goals-against average of just 0.61. In her BGSU career, the Sylvania, Ohio native has 105 total saves and a GAA of 1.17 in over 1,600 minutes between the posts.
COX CONNECTS
• Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox has scored two goals in her first three matches as a Falcon. She found the back of the net against Loyola Marymount, and scored BG's second goal in the 3-0 win over Oakland.
• Cox, a transfer from UNCW, now has career totals of nine goals and 20 points in 26 career matches (23 with the Seahawks).
HUBERT WATCH
• Redshirt senior Erica Hubert has proven to be a potent offensive threat for the Falcons every time she takes the field. Hubert enters the Xavier match with a career total of 62 points, including 28 goals, for the Orange and Brown.
• Hubert's goal vs. Oakland moved her into a tie for second on the BGSU list for career goals. She has matched Samantha Meister (2002-05) on that chart.
• With her 62 points, Hubert is ranked fifth on that school list. She needs two points to match her former teammate, Skylar Fleak (2014-17), for fourth place, and Hubert is just three points shy of third-place Jill Conover (1999-2002).
• Hubert has scored eight career match-winning goals, tying her for third on that BG list. She is just one behind second-place Corbie Yee (2005-08).
• Kristy Coppes (2001-04) owns all three school records, with 52 goals (including 14 match winners) and 111 points during her four years with the Falcons. The top-10 lists can be found on page 7 of these notes.
KENNEDY WATCH
• Junior Maureen Kennedy tied the school single-season record with 10 assists a year ago. She enters the Xavier match with a total of 14 career assists, tying her for 10th on that BGSU list.
• With a goal in the Oakland match, Kennedy now has 26 points as a Falcon. She is a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty kicks in her BGSU career.
THE 2018 CAPTAINS
• Seniors Morgan Abbitt and Erica Hubert and redshirt junior Victoria Cope are the captains of the 2018 Falcons.
THE OPPONENTS
• Xavier is 2-4-0 on the season, but that record is deceiving, as the Musketeers' early-season schedule has included matches at Louisville, Tennessee and West Virginia. XU took U of L to overtime, and one of the teams' wins came over Toledo (2-1) in the season opener. Samantha Dewey leads the Musketeers with two goals and five points, while Toni Bizzarro has played in four matches in goal and has a 1.70 goals-against average. XU was picked to finish seventh in the Big East Conference, and Dewey was named to the Preseason All-Big East Team. Coach Nate Lie welcomed back 75 percent of the team's scoring from last year's club that finished 8-8-4 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play.
• Northwestern is undefeated, as the Wildcats take a 4-0-1 record into a Friday match vs. Loyola Marymount. The 'Cats are ranked No. 15 in the nation in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll. NU's wins have come against Wake Forest, Iowa State, Missouri and MAC member Miami. The 'Cats have a scoreless streak of 431:47, having allowed only one goal all season (vs. Miami in the season opener). Six different players have scored one goal apiece, while Mackenzie Wood has a GAA of just 0.19 and four shutouts in five matches. NU was picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten. Last year, the Wildcats finished second in the conference, advanced to the final of the Big Ten Tournament, and made the second round of the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year. Senior Marisa Viggiano has been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list. Coach Michael Moynihan welcomed back seven starters from the 2017 club that went 12-8-3 overall and 7-3-1 in the Big Ten.
THE SERIES
• BGSU leads Xavier, 2-1-0, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Musketeers captured the most recent meeting. After BGSU picked up shutout wins in both 2006 (1-0 in 2-OT at Cochrane) and '08 (2-0 on the road), XU came to BG in 2010 and came away with a 3-2 victory.
• The Falcons and Northwestern have never met in women's soccer.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the Northwestern contest, the Falcons will close the non-conference portion of the schedule with a two-game homestand. BG will face DePaul on Thursday (Sept. 13) before meeting Youngstown State three days later (Sept. 16). As always, admission to all BGSU soccer regular-season home matches is free.
