Perry leads the Falcons with 18 & 7
The visiting University of Toledo used a 14-0 run early in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit, and the Rockets went on to a 79-65 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19).
Mikaela Boyd led the Gold and Midnight Blue with 25 points, while three of her teammates scored in double figures as well. Nakiah Black had 16 points, with Kaayla McIntyre adding 15 and Mariella Santucci 13.
The Falcons got another solid game from sophomore Angela Perry, who displayed an array of post moves en route to 18 points off the bench. Perry also added a team-leading seven rebounds.
Freshman Morgan McMillen had 14 points for the Orange and Brown, hitting four of her team's eight three-point field goals.
McIntyre had a double-double for the Daughters of DeBenedictis, pacing all players with 10 rebounds, and she also had five blocked shots. Santucci dished out eight assists.
BGSU enjoyed a lopsided 34-8 advantage in bench scoring, but the Rockets had 42 rebounds to the Falcons' 26.
FIRST QUARTER
• BG spotted the Rockets a quick 4-0 lead within the first minute, and a Black three-pointer gave the Glass City cage crew a 7-2 lead after two minutes. But, BG responded with the next six points, as Perry sandwiched a pair of buckets around a layup by senior Sydney Lambert.
• Boyd hit a jumper to begin a modest 4-0 run for the visitors, but McMillen knocked down the first of her four triples on the day, and redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak answered a Rocket layup with a bucket of her own, tying the score at 13-13.
• Glowniak's bucket ignited a 7-0 Falcon streak, with the redshirt soph involved in all seven points. She kicked the ball out to true soph Madisen Parker for a three-pointer, and after a steal by freshman Kadie Hempfling, Parker fired the ball ahead to Glowniak for a transition layup and an 18-13 lead.
• The azure and aureate finally stopped that streak with a solitary free throw, but Hempfling fed McMillen for a three-ball with under a minute to go. McIntyre scored in the paint, but Lambert found Hempfling for a corner three that beat the buzzer and gave the Falcons a 24-16 lead.
• BGSU shot 66.7 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes, going 10-of-15.
SECOND QUARTER
• Perry opened the second-quarter scoring with a layup, and followed that up with another bucket in the paint at the 8:22 mark, giving BG a 12-point lead, at 28-16.
• But, BG then went scoreless for several minutes. After Black and Boyd scored, though, so did the Rockets, as neither team had a point for a stretch of nearly two minutes. But, Black connected from the arc at the 5:51 mark, and BG's lead was down to five.
• Perry hit a a couple of free throws to begin a 4-0 run, with Lambert also scoring twice at the stripe, and BG answered UT scores with hoops by Perry and senior Maddie Cole. A 5-0 response for the Rockets cut the Falcons' advantage to just 36-33 with 1:46 on the clock, but Lambert hit two more free throws, and junior Andrea Cecil's three-ball with just under a minute to go gave the Falcons a 41-33 lead at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Glowniak opened the scoring with a pair of charity tosses just over a minute into the quarter, but UT then went on the aforementioned 14-point run. When Santucci hit a three-pointer with 6:44 remaining, the Rockets had a 45-43 lead.
• And, McIntyre made two shots at the line just under a minute later, before the teams each went without a point for nearly three minutes.
• Glowniak hit a free throw at the 3:05 mark, and after UT went to the line and converted twice, McMillen hit a three for BG's first field goal of the period. The Falcons were within two points, and the hosts twice answered Rocket hoops with points of their own, as McMillen scored at the stripe and Perry produced in the paint. Black made a pair of free throws to give the Rockets a five-point lead, 56-51, after three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER
• In the fourth, the Falcons got within four points on two early occasions, as Cecil knocked down a three-pointer, and Lambert scored in the paint. But, each time, UT answered. After Lambert's bucket, Boyd hit a jumper, then made a layup after a UT offensive rebound.
• Perry brought the Falcons within five, but Santucci responded with a three-pointer, and Boyd's bucket with 4:17 to go put the Rockets' lead into double digits for the first time.
• BG struggled to find the shooting range the rest of the way, and the visitors were able to maintain that lead and head to their snow-covered bus in the loading dock with a MAC road victory.
