Falcons' Overtime Thriller Ends In Favor Of RIT At Ice Breaker Tournament

TOLEDO, Ohio  - The Bowling Green State University hockey team fell to the RIT Tigers on Friday night (Oct. 11) in game one of the 2019 Ice Breaker Tournament by a final score of 3-2 in a game that needed overtime to decide a winner. The Falcons struck first with a goal in the first period from sophomore Evan Dougherty. Casey Linkenheld extended the lead in the second period, but RIT would go on to score just 34 seconds later. The Tigers netted the game winning goal a little over a minute into the first overtime period. The loss moves Bowling Green's record to 1-1-0 on the season heading into tomorrow's Ice Breaker third place contest against Western Michigan.Â

- For the second consecutive game, Evan Dougherty found the back of the net, the second goal of his career, to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the first period. He was assisted on the breakaway by freshman Adam Conquest, marking the first point of his collegiate career.Â
- Casey Linkenheld extended the lead for the Orange and Brown with a breakaway goal, his first of the season and sixth of his career. Assists on the goal came from Alex Barber and Justin Wells.
- RIT quickly answered, scoring just 34 seconds later with Brody Valette scoring his first goal of the season with assists from Jake Hamacher and Jordan Peacock.Â
- In the third period with 4:55 remaining, RIT freshman Andrew Rinaldi scored his first goal of his career to tie the game at 2-2 with assists from seniors Ryan Kruper and Darren Brady.Â
- 1:18 into overtime, Caleb Moretz netted the game-winning goal for the Tigers being assisted by Will Caverley and Colton Trumbla.Â

- Cameron Wright nearly continued his scoring ways early in the first period, tipping the puck initially off the stick of Tim Theocharidis. After a review, the goal was waved off due to a high stick call.
- Nearing the end of the first period, RIT saw a two-on-one breakaway, but stellar defensive play by the defenseman Wells and goalie Eric Dop stopped the surge scoreless, maintaining the 1-0 BGSU lead.Â
- In total, the Falcons logged 15 shots on goal in just the first period, totaling 32Â over the course of the game.Â
- Early in the second period Eric Dop made two key stops during a power play by the Tigers, using all of his 5-10 frame to halt the effort.Â

- After being scoreless in 13 games last year, the sophomore Evan Dougherty now has two goals in two games to begin the 2019-20 campaign. This marks the third consecutive season that BGSU has had a player score at least one goal in the first two games of the season. Tim Theocharidis, Connor Ford and Casey Linkenheld all did it last year (2018-19) with Cameron Wright doing so to begin the 2017-18 season.
- With the assist on Casey Linkenheld's goal, Alex Barber joins Dougherty with points in each of the two games this season having also assisted on Ford's goal against Miami last Sunday.Â

- The Falcons return to the Huntington Center on Saturday night (Oct. 12) for an 8 p.m. start against Western Michigan as part of the 2019 Ice Breaker Tournament. The game will serve as the first of three straight meetings in three different venues between the Falcons and Broncos with them also playing a home-and-home series next weekend.Â
