BGSU Cross Country Teams Set To Compete In Louisville XC Classic
October 02, 2019 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams are in preparation to continue their respective seasons this Saturday (Oct. 5). They will be traveling to Louisville, Kentucky to take the course at the 18th annual Louisville Cross Country Classic.
Louisville Cross Country Classic
The 2019 Louisville Cross Country Classic will be the 18th annual edition of the race. The Classic will take place this Saturday, Oct. 5 starting at 9:30 AM with the men's 8k event. The women's 5k race will follow, slated for 10:15 AM. Both races will be held at E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Both BGSU Cross Country programs are familiar with the course as Bowling Green has competed in Louisville for the Classic and Pre-Nationals many times over the previous five seasons. The men's team competed in the 2018 Louisville XC Classic, while the women's team had a single competitor run the race.
Scouting The Field
In what will be the biggest meet of the season so far, the 2019 Louisville Cross Country Classic will feature 133 men's teams and 135 women's teams. Bowling Green will be joined by two other Mid-American Conference schools including Ball State University (women's race only) and Ohio University. This will be the second time BGSU's women's team has raced against Ball State this season, as the Falcons finished just behind the Cardinals in the Spartan Invite last month.
Notable Quotes
"With how we build the season, this is going to be our biggest and most competitive meet so far," Head Coach Lou Snelling said on the women's team competing in Louisville. "It (the Classic) tends to be a more regional experience, which is great for us. We have talked a lot about preparing for that dynamic, in terms of a bigger field, bigger numbers and a bigger race experience. We have some specific individual goals that have covered over the last couple of weeks. In general it's using Louisville and Bradley as final preparation for the MAC." Coach Snelling went on to explain that from a coaching perspective, the familiarity of the course allows them to set specific goals even for those who have yet to compete in Louisville.
"We are looking to finish in the top six again," Coach Juan Carrillo said on his expectations for the men's team in Louisville. "Last year we finished sixth and we finished behind some pretty good schools, so we want to use that as a benchmark to be in the top six again. For this race we are going to have a full squad….It's exciting that we're going to put seven guys on the line, and out of those seven our top five will be there the rest of the season. I'm looking to see our top guys Kyle and Cesar running toward the front of the race, and have our second group Gabe, Ray and AJ run together for as long as they can. If we do that I feel we should have a good score." Coach Carrillo explained that at this point in the season, the field of competition will resemble how it will look for the MAC Championships next month. Simply being that there is less time to improve in three weeks.

Sophomore Sydney Niekamp would finish close behind in second for BGSU at 33rd overall with a time of 22:47.7, setting a new personal best for her in a collegiate 6k.
