Mwembia Earns MAC Player-of-the-Week Honors
November 12, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Senior goalkeeper kept two more clean sheets last week
Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Anthony Mwembia has been named a Mid-American Conference Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday morning (Nov. 12).
Mwembia earns co-Player-of-the-Week accolades, sharing this week's honor with Akron's Colin Biros.
Mwembia garners a league P-O-W award for the first time this season and the second time in his storied Falcon career.
Mwembia, a native of Toulouse, France, had a 2-0-0 record and a goals-against average of 0.00 last week, as the Falcons won a pair of matches to wrap up the regular season. Mwembia made a total of six saves on the week, including two in a 1-0 road win over Wright State on Tuesday (Nov. 5), as the Falcons captured the I-75 Cup.
Then, on Saturday night (Nov. 9), Mwembia had four stops, all in the second half, to preserve a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois. The win over NIU clinched a MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round home game for the Falcons.
Mwembia has allowed only one goal in the last five matches. He now has 10 shutouts on the season, the highest total by a BGSU goalkeeper since 1998. Mwembia ranks second in BGSU history in career shutouts, and now has 29. He trails only BGSU Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow (42) on that career chart.
Mwembia now has 234 career saves, and has moved into a tie for seventh on that BG list. He has a GAA of just 0.86 this season, and he is currently tied for third in the nation in shutouts.
The Falcons are 11-6-1 overall, heading into Tuesday's (Nov. 12) match. BGSU welcomes NIU back to Cochrane, as the teams will meet for the second time in four days, this time in a MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round match. First touch is at 5:00 p.m., and admission is free.
