BG Battles Broncos to 1-1 Draw in Kalamazoo
October 25, 2025 | Men's Soccer
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Trace Terry converted a penalty kick with under nine minutes to go, lifting the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Western Michigan University Saturday afternoon (Oct. 25). The Missouri Valley Conference match took place at the WMU Soccer Complex.
Terry's goal drew the Falcons (5-7-3, 1-3-1 MVC) even, after Sahel Yessen had scored a first-half goal for the Broncos (4-8-3, 1-1-3 MVC).
Jason Ball made six saves, the highest total of his young career, in goal for the Falcons, who earned a result in Kalamazoo for the first time in 19 years. BGSU had suffered nine consecutive losses on the road against Western since a 2-1 win in the Mid-American Conference Tournament in 2006. Overall, BGSU leads the all-time series with the Broncos by a 29-23-7 count.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Broncos got on the board with just under 25 minutes gone. Sahel Yessen took the ball down the left side, and cut along the end line. As Yessen neared the left post, he hit a short cross that deflected off of a BG player and into the net.
• With just over six minutes left in the half, a BGSU throw-in was helped along by several headers, and the ball found Saul Rios in the box. The junior defender hit a left-footed volley that forced WMU goalkeeper Alex Lindewirth into a leaping save. Lindewirth was somehow able to tip the ball over the crossbar.
• Soon after, Yessen received a short pass in the box and volleyed a shot out of the air, but his effort from 10 yards out sailed high. WMU immediately got the ball back and a pass found Emiel Nieuwhof behind the defense, but he missed the target as his shot went wide left.
• In the 56th minute of the match, Jason Ball made a great diving save to rob Liam Smith on Smith's header after a left-side cross.
• Ball made another diving stop on a shot by Yessen with just under 15 minutes to go.
• With under nine minutes remaining, a left-side diagonal ball into the box was headed back across by Trace Terry. Joshua Saavedra headed the ball toward net, where it was grabbed by Lindewirth. On the play, however, a penalty kick was awarded to the Falcons as Saavedra was taken down on the play. Terry stepped up and blasted the PK past Lindewirth to tie the score.
• With just over two minutes to go, the Falcons headed into the WMU end of the field, and Ryko Bodurov hit a shot from distance that was tipped wide by the Bronco goalkeeper. Less than a minute later at the other end of the pitch, Ball made a point-blank save on Yessen, coming off of his line to smother a shot attempt.
