Falcons finish season in national tourney for second consecutive November
Senior Chelsee Washington's first-half goal gave the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team an early lead, but the No. 19 University of Michigan rallied for a 2-1 win over the Falcons on Friday evening (Nov. 15) in NCAA Championships first-round action at U-M Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Wolverines advance to next weekend's second round. The Falcons (14-6-3) see the season come to an end in the NCAA Championships for the second-straight November.
Washington's goal came in the 35th minute. She possessed the ball just outside the 18-yard box in the center of the field before passing it out to sophomore Mackenzie Reuber on the right side. Reuber hit a quick one-timer back toward Washington as the senior entered the area.
Washington knifed through a pair of Michigan defenders, chested the ball down and drilled her shot past U-M goalkeeper Hillary Beall and into the lower-left-hand side of the net.
Michigan, however, got a goal in the 65th minute to tie the match, then scored with 11:02 remaining in the second half to take the lead for good.
The Wolverines outshot the Falcons by a narrow 13-11 count, but BGSU had a 7-5 lead in shots on goal. In her final collegiate game, Washington had four shots attempts to tie for game honors, and she led all players with four shots on goal.
Senior Kathleen Duwve made three saves in her final contest as a Falcon.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT: SEVEN STELLAR SENIORS
• Friday's match marked the final contest in a BGSU uniform for BGSU's seven seniors. That group includes Hannah Dolfuss, Kathleen Duwve, Monica Florez, Maureen Kennedy, Rachel Muller, Kristin Tveit and Chelsee Washington.
• In 2016, six of those seven players helped BGSU to a total of eight wins, the most victories for the Falcons in eight years.
• Tveit joined the group in 2017, and the Falcons AVERAGED more than 13 wins per season during the next three years. BGSU advanced to the MAC Tournament's championship match in each of those three seasons, winning both the MAC regular-season and tourney crowns in 2018 and '19.
• BGSU has won 49 overall games and 29 MAC regular-season matches since the start of 2016. Both are new program records for victories in a four-year span.
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT: FINE FALCON FRESHMEN
• For the first time this season, five freshmen were in the starting lineup. BGSU had started as many as four frosh on one prior occasion, in the MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round win over Central Michigan.
• On Friday, Jasmijn Dijsselhof made her first collegiate start, joining fellow first-year Falcon frosh Katie Cox, Lena Kovar, Makenzie Ortman and Audrey Shea in the Starting XI.
• Kennedy White was the first substitute of the night for Matt Fannon's club, giving BG six freshmen in the match for a brief period late in the half.
Â
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 4' | WIth just 3:58 gone in the match, the Wolverines were awarded a penalty kick, but U-M junior Alia Martin pushed that kick just wide of the left goalpost.
• 9' | The hosts attempted to play a through-ball into the box, but it was just a little too far for a striker, and BGSU senior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve picked it up.
• 9' | Less than a minute later, freshman Katie Cox hit a right-side cross toward the center of the field, but it was blocked out of play.
• 11' | The Wolverines attempted another combination play, but on the return pass, a BG defender shielded the U-M player away from the ball, enabling Duwve to get there first.
• 13' | Freshman Lena Kovar played a free kick into the box from the right side. The ball was knocked around the top of the area, before a foul was called on the Falcons.
• 14' | Senior Chelsee Washington found herself in the middle of the park with plenty of space. The senior took the ball downfield and attempted to play a pass to sophomore Sarah Allen on the right side, but that pass was blocked.
• 15' | A minute later, Washington found redshirt junior Nikki Cox on the right side of the field, and Cox took the ball into the area and fired. But, her shot was saved by U-M 'keeper Hillary Beall.
• 17' | Freshman Makenzie Ortman won a ball in the Michigan third of the field, and was immediately upended. Kovar took the ensuing free kick and hit a hard shot, but the ball whizzed just past the right goalpost and caromed off of a snowbank.
• 19' | Soph Mackenzie Reuber won a corner kick, and off of that kick, Washington – as she has done countless times in her BG career – outleaped everyone else to get her head on the ball. Washington put a shot on frame, but Beall was able to make the save.
• 20' | Quickly, the Wolverines countered, but a hard shot by Meredith Haakenson sailed well over the crossbar.
• 26' | Nikki Cox won a corner for the Falcons, but the hosts were able to successfully deal with that corner.
• 27' | Nikki Cox stole the ball near midfield and embarked upon a long run. She looked to slide a pass to Allen, but the ball was hit just a little too hard and went out for a U-M goal kick.
• 29' | Raleigh Loughman fired a shot from distance, but the shot went just wide right.
• 31' | Reuber found Allen, who in turn hit Nikki Cox with a pass. Cox made a nifty play to keep the ball in bounds, and won a corner kick.
• 32' | Off of that corner, junior Nikhita Jacob – an Ann Arbor native – headed the ball toward goal. But, Jacob's shot was hit directly at Beall, who made the stop.
• 32' | Less than a minute later, U-M hit a dangerous curving serve that curved on goal, but Duwve grabbed the ball with several strikers lurking in the area.
• 35' | GOAL | Washington gave the Falcons the lead with 34:39 elapsed. She played a short ball to Reuber, who immediately knocked it back toward Washington as the senior entered the box. Washington chested the ball down as she raced between a pair of U-M players and into the clear. She quickly fired a shot past Beall to give the Brown and Orange the lead.
• 38' | Ortman found sophomore Lynsey Spotts on the right side, but a Spotts cross/shot went just wide on the far side of the box.
• 44 | Jacob's cross was just out of reach of freshman Kennedy White on the left side of the penalty area.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 54' | Nikki Cox hit a hard shot after a nifty Katie Cox backheel on the counterattack, but the effort was saved.
• 56' | Kovar's free kick went into the box, where Washington nodded it on frame. Beall made the save, but could not hang onto the ball. Nikki Cox reached it first, and the redshirt junior attempted to play it back into the center of the box, but the Wolverines were able to knock the pass away.
• 58' | Allen won a corner on the left side. Off of that kick, the ball was deflected to Reuber outside the box, but her shot from distance was gathered in by the 'keeper.
• 59' | Kovar blocked a right-side U-M cross at the near post, but a Wolverine played it back into the path of the onrushing Haakenson. She hit a hard shot from approximately eight yards out, but the blast went over the goal.
• 63' | Nicki Hernandez hit a hard volley near the far post, after a serve from Skylar Anderson, but the Hernandez shot went wide.
• 65' | GOAL | The Wolverines equalized, as the ball was played through on the left side. Duwve was forced to come off of her line to contest the shot by Sarah Stratigakis. Stratigakis slid the ball toward goal, where Michigan's Danielle Wolfe and a BG player were running side by side. The Falcons attempted to clear the ball, but BG was unable to keep it out of the net, and it was a 1-1 match.
• 68' | Brooke Cilley blasted a shot from distance, but the ball rang off of the right post.
• 68' | Off of a U-M corner kick soon after, a shot by Samantha DeVecchi was aved by Duwve.
• 70' | Nikki Cox slid a ball to the onrushing Washington as she headed into the box. Washington powered her way through a U-M challenge and was in behind the defense. She hit a hard shot, but Beall came off of her line to make a kick save and a beauty.
• 71' | Duwve made a save on a long shot by Cilley.
• 79' | GOAL | The Wolverines took the lead on a Hernandez golazo. U-M stole the ball near midfield, and it fell to Hernandez. In full stride, she hit a picture-perfect volley that dipped under the crossbar for what would prove to be the winner.
• 81' | A cross found Hernandez on the left side, and she attempted to hit a shot toward the far post. But, Duwve made a diving stop, getting her glove on the ball to knock it out of the penalty area on the far side.
• 84' | Senior Kristin Tveit played a cross into the box from the right side, but White's header was off the mark.
• 87' | A Washington pass found Tveit, and again the senior played a right-side cross toward White in a crowded penalty area. White was able to settle the ball, but with several defenders around her, could not get a shot off.
• 89' | Haakenson fired a shot with just over a minute to go, and although that shot was off line, the Wolverines were able to keep the Falcons pinned in their own half of the field for most of the remaining 60-plus seconds.Â
