Nikki Cox Named to Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week
November 05, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Redshirt junior had five points in two BGSU wins last week
Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Nikki Cox has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday morning (Nov. 5).
Cox earns a mention to the team by the web site for the second time this season and the third time in her BGSU career. She received honorable mention to the TDS Team of the Week once in 2018 and once earlier this year.
Cox, a native of Granville, Ohio (Granville H.S.), had a team-high five points as the Falcons went 2-0-0 last week, winning a Mid-American Conference regular-season title and advancing in the league tournament. Cox scored the game-winning goal in both matches.
Her goal on Thursday (Oct. 31) came in the 77th minute and broke a 1-1 tie in BGSU's 3-1 victory at Toledo. That win enabled the Falcons to clinch the MAC regular-season championship outright.
Then, in Sunday's (Nov. 3) MAC Tournament quarterfinal round vs. Central Michigan, she was involved in the scoring of two BG goals less than four minutes apart early in the second half. Her through-ball to sophomore Sarah Allen in the box led to Allen's game-opening goal just three minutes into the second half. Then, just 3:27 later, she redirected a short cross from Allen into the back of the net for a 2-0 BGSU lead, as the Brown and Orange went on to a 4-1 win over the Chippewas.
On the year, Cox has a team-leading 23 points on nine goals and five assists. She now has 42 points in 42 career matches at BGSU.
The Falcons are 13-5-2 overall, and BGSU finished MAC play with a 10-1-0 record for the second-straight year. BG is 23-2-1 in all games vs. MAC opponents since Cox joined the program.
Cochrane Stadium will be the site of this weekend's MAC Tournament semifinals and final. The Falcons, the tourney's number-one seed, will face fourth-seeded Buffalo in Friday's (Nov. 8) first semifinal, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The second semifinal will feature sixth-seeded Ohio vs. seventh-seeded Eastern Michigan, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Friday's two survivors will return to Cochrane for Sunday's (Nov. 10) final. The winner of that match will earn the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
