Senior standouts each named to the first team for the second-straight season
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BGSU Athletic Communications) -- Two Bowling Green State University women's soccer standouts have earned yet another honor. Seniors Maureen Kennedy and Chelsee Washington have been named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Team.
Kennedy and Washington each were named to the Scholar All-North/Central Region First Team for the second-straight season.
BGSU was one of just two schools in the North/Central Region with two first-team selections, joining Wisconsin. Kennedy and Washington were the only two Mid-American Conference players to earn first-team honors.
Both players have earned a veritable plethora of awards over the past few seasons.
Kennedy recently became the first player in program to be named a Senior CLASS Award® All-American, earning first-team honors. The MAC's Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season, she finished fourth on the team with 17 points, despite missing the last four-plus contests due to injury. Kennedy, a native of Cypress, Calif. (Los Alamitos), had five goals and seven assists on the year, and she had 12 points on three goals and a team-high six helpers in MAC play. Kennedy scored a pair of game-winning goals in 2019, and saw another goal tie a match with just 19.3 seconds remaining in regulation.
Kennedy has also been named to the USC All-Midwest Region Second Team as well as the Academic All-District Team, sponsored by CoSIDA. Last week, she was named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
Kennedy wound up her career with 61 points, ranking seventh in BGSU history. She finished second in school history in career assists, with 31, and was just two shy of tying the school record. And, she ended her career ranked 13th in career goals, with 15.
In the classroom, Kennedy is a psychology major with minors in biology and gerontology and a 3.954 cumulative GPA at the time of nomination for the award.
Washington, a native of Carrollton, Texas (Hebron), was named the MAC's Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 and, like Kennedy, was selected to the All-MAC First Team for the second consecutive season. Washington scored a team-leading 25 points in her senior campaign, finishing second on the Falcons with eight goals and leading the club with nine assists.
Washington's goal total included overtime winners vs. both Dayton and Eastern Michigan, and a goal in the NCAA Championships at Michigan. In MAC games, she tied for the team scoring lead, with 14 points in the 11 conference contests. Washington ended her career with 65 points at BGSU, tying for fourth in school history. She finished fifth in career goals, with 21, and tied for fourth on the BG assists list, with 23.
Washington was named to the USC All-Midwest Region First Team, becoming just the second player in program history to earn all-region first-team honors. She was one of nine Falcons named to the Academic All-MAC Team last week.
Washington, a criminal justice major, had a 3.629 cumulative GPA at the time of nomination.
In 2019, the Falcons won both the MAC regular-season and tournament titles for the second consecutive year. BGSUÂ went 14-6-3 overall, tying the school record for wins, and finished with a league ledger of 10-1-0 for the second-straight season. The Falcons became the first program in MAC history to win 10 conference matches in back-to-back seasons.
During their four years in a BGSU uniform, Kennedy and Washington helped the Falcons to an overall record of 49-28-8, a MAC regular-season mark of 29-13-2 and a 35-14-4 ledger in all games vs. MAC foes.
Over the last three seasons, the duo helped BG go 41-18-7 overall, 26-6-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 32-7-3 in all games vs. conference opposition. BGSU advanced to the MAC Tournament's championship match in each of the last three seasons, winning the title in both 2018 and '19.
