December 21, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Purdue outlasts the Falcons, 81-74
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team gave Purdue University a battle, but the Boilermakers ultimately came away with an 81-74 win over the Falcons on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 21). The non-conference contest was held at Mackey Arena.
Four players scored in double figures for BGSU (6-5), led by fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson with 18. Junior Madisen Parker, the team's lone Indiana native, scored 17 points and went 5-for-7 from three-point range.
Freshman Elissa Brett had 15 points, the highest total of her young Falcon career, while junior Mari Hill had 11 points and a game-high nine assists.
Purdue's Ae'Rianna Harris led all players with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and she had five blocked shots as well. Kayana Traylor scored 19 points for the hosts, and Lyndsey Whilby and Tamara Farquhar added 13 and 10, respectively.
The game featured six ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than seven points over the entire 40 minutes, and the Boilermakers' largest lead of the game was the final margin, which came after Farquhar hit a pair of free throws with 10.3 seconds to go.
Both teams had 21 assists on 28 baskets, and BGSU hit 11 three-pointers to Purdue's six, but the hosts made 19 free throws to the Falcons' seven.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I'm really proud of our team's fight and competitiveness. Coming into the game, we talked about collective competitiveness. It was a one-possession game in the last few minutes, and I'm ready to see us take that next step – get a big stop, hit critical free throws ... we need to keep moving the needle."
"I loved our fight. We're coming off of a long stretch on the road. It has really helped us grow up, and I'm excited to see what that looks like moving forward."
FIRST QUARTER
• Purdue scored on the first two possessions of the game, as Tamara Farquhar hit a short runner, and Kayana Traylor made a layup. But, sophomore Kadie Hempfling found junior Madisen Parker for a three-pointer, and moments later, junior Mari Hill hit a cutting Angela Perry for a layup. Hempfling was fouled on the Falcons' next possession, and her free throws gave BG a 7-6 lead.
• Hill stole the ball and fired it ahead to Hempfling for a bucket and a 9-6 advantage, and moments later, Hempfling found fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson for a layup and an 11-8 lead.
• Ae'Rianna Harris scored inside to cut BG's lead to one, but freshman Elissa Brett knocked down back-to-back three-point tries. First, Hill drove and kicked the ball to Brett for a corner three. Then, Hempfling drove the baseline and whipped a pass to the freshman for a triple from the left wing. BG's lead was 17-10, the Falcons' largest advantage of the day.
• The hosts ended the quarter on a 10-3 run to tie the score after 10 minutes. That run began on a three-point play by Jenelle Grant. Thompson hit a transition layup after both Brett and Hempfling fired quick passes that combined to cover the length of the court. But, Cassidy Hardin hit a three-pointer, and a pair of free throws in the final seconds tied the contest at 20-20.
SECOND QUARTER
• Lyndsey Whilby scored five-straight points for the hosts, with a trailing three and a driving layup. Hill's nifty reverse layup was answered by another Whilby triple, and Purdue had a 28-22 lead.
• But, freshman Olivia Trice spotted an open Parker for a three-pointer, and moments later, Thompson took a pass from Hill and knocked down a triple try to cut PU's lead to 30-28.
• The teams trades points, as Uecker scored off of an inbounds pass from Hill, and Hill knocked down a straightaway trey. But, Whilby answered with a triple. Hill sliced through the defense for a layup that tied the score at 35-all.
• Parker drilled back-to-back long-distance shots, off of passes from Hill and Uecker, respectively, and BG had a 41-38 lead in the final minute of the half. Whilby hit another trey, but Brett's baseline drive resulted in a layup that rolled in as the horn sounded, giving the Falcons a 43-38 advantage at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• After the Boilers opened the second-half scoring, Thompson knocked down a long-range shot for a 46-40 lead, but the hosts responded with a three-point play, then a putback that cut the Falcons' advantage to a single point.
• Uecker drove across the lane and hit a banker, and the Falcons forced a shot-clock violation as a Purdue three-point shot found nothing but air.
• Thompson knocked down a right-side triple to give the Brown and Orange a 51-45 lead, and after a Harris layup, Brett hit a short floater. The latter bucket came after Hill was knocked to the ground on a drive, but grabbed the ball while in a seated position and flipped it to Brett for the basket and a 53-47 lead.
• But, a long two-pointer by Karissa McLaughlin was followed by a pair of steals and transition layups for Purdue. Suddenly, the game was tied. When Whilby hit a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down, the home team had a 9-0 run and a 56-53 lead.
• Uecker knocked down a long two-point shot, and after Purdue hit a free throw, Brett was fouled and made a shot at the stripe. Another charity toss by the hosts gave the Boilermakers a 58-56 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• BG began to get into some foul trouble, as the Falcons were whistled for four fouls in the first two minutes of the quarter. But, a Parker three-ball tied the score at 59-59 with 7:40 to go.Â
• The teams traded buckets, with Hempfling hitting a driving one-hander. But, moments later, an and-one layup and the ensuing free throw gave the hosts a 66-61 lead midway through the quarter.
• Thompson hit a nifty floater while being fouled, and added a charity toss to cut the margin to two points. After Purdue scored inside, Hill answered with a layup, but Harris scored again, and BG turned the ball back over.
• The score remained 70-66 in favor of the hosts for several possessions, before  Harris layup made it a six-point game with just under two minutes to go. Brett found a cutting Hill for a layup, and then Hill very nearly came up with a steal. The junior knocked the ball away from a Purdue player, and the officials reviewed the play to see who last touched the ball before it went out of bounds. After the review, the ball stayed with the Boilermakers. Then, Hill was called for a foul out top, and Traylor knocked down a pair of shots from the stripe for a six-point lead with 1:20 to go.
• Brett knocked down a driving layup, but Hempfling was whistled for her fifth foul, and two more Traylor tosses made it a76-70 Purdue lead with 45.9 seconds remaining. Brett scored again, but the hosts successfully inbounded the ball and, after a BG foul, made two more free throws.
