Hockey Scores Eight For Third Time This Season In Shutout Win Over Nanooks

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The No. 16 ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team skated off with a strong 8-0 win against Alaska Fairbanks on Friday night (Feb. 15) . The Falcons tied their season high for goals, scoring eight for the third time this season, while also securing their fourth shutout. The Falcons were led by John Schilling who assisted on four of BGSU's eight goals. Connor Ford picked up three assists. In the score column, Sam Craggs led the way with two goals, while also picking up an assist. To cap off the night, Bowling Green tallied two power play goals and two shorthanded goals.

- BGSU will host Alaska Fairbanks again on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Slater Family Ice Arena with puck drop set for 7:07 p.m. This will be the second and final game of the home series.

Scoring Plays
- The Falcons lit up the scoreboard early with a goal from Stephen Baylis. The assists coming from Cameron Wright and Connor Ford. This at 6:30 into the first period.
- Not long after, Wright added a goal of his own, taking advantage of a power play for his fourth power play goal of the season. Wright would be assisted by Brandon Kruse and Connor Ford. This at 8:38 into the first period.
- Just 17 seconds later at 8:55 into the first, the Falcons added their third goal with Taylor Schneider finding the back of the net with assists from John Schilling and Sam Craggs.
- Will Cullen would tack on another goal for the Falcons with just 35.3 seconds left in the first period. Cullen put the Falcons up 4-0 with help from Lukas Craggs and Alec Rauhauser.
- Bowling Green kept the momentum in the second period as Sam Craggs put one over the shoulder of Nanooks goaltender Anton Martinsson from one knee. He was assisted by John Schilling and Connor Ford (his thid assist of the night) on the play.This just 6:15 into the second period.
- At 8:47 into the second period, BGSU added a sixth goal shorthanded, coming from Jacob Dalton. He was unassisted on the play.
- Sam Craggs opened the third period with his second goal of the night, with assists coming from John Schilling (his third of the night) and Connor McDonald.
- Frederic Letourneau added the Falcons eighth, and final, goal of the night at 5:01 into the third period shorthanded. John Schilling tallied his fourth assist of the night on the goal.
Other Key Plays
- In less than two minutes of play, the Falcons showed determination, firing four shots at UAF's goaltender, a precursor to the score for the night.
- Just nine minutes into regulation, the Nanooks made a change between the pipes after the Falcons capitalized for three goals, including two within 17 seconds. Gustavs Grigals who started the game for Alaska came out as Anton Martinsson went in. He would play the rest of the game.
- In the second period, the Falcons survived a 5v3 UAF advantage, and scored a shorthanded goal in the process.
- With 6:48 left in the second, a fight broke out behind the Falcons' goal that resulted in five players being sent to the box. No one was ejected from the contest
- Four minutes later, another fight began, this time behind the Nanooks' goal. Again, no ejections were made.
Falcon Stat Facts
- Ryan Bednard secured his third shutout of the season, making 14 saves in the process. As a team, this marks the fifth shutout of the season for the Orange and Brown. Ryan Bednard's shutout gives him seven on his career, tying him for second in program history with Tyler Masters and Andrew Hammond. Chris Nell holds the program record with 11.
- John Schilling and Connor Ford extended their scoring streaks to three games as they tallied a combined seven assists on the evening. The duo has scored a total of 13 points over the Falcons' previous three games. This was the first four point game of John Schilling's career, as well as the first three assist game of Connor Ford's career. Ford now has six multi-point games this year, and seven in his career. While John Schilling tallies his third multi-point game of the season, and the eighth of his career.
- Brandon Kruse's two assists extended his team lead in the category to 23 for the season, as well as his team lead in points, now at 31. This was the tenth multi-point game of his season and number 16 of his career.
- This is the Falcons' third time scoring eight goals this season. They totaled eight against Mercyhurst (Oct. 6) to open the season and against Ohio State (Oct. 26).
- Cameron Wright tied Brandon Kruse for third on the team in power play goals with four on the 2018-19 season. He tallies multi-point game number six of the season, and number 12 of his career with BGSU.
