March 11, 2019 | Ice Hockey
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Max Johnson of the Bowling Green State University hockey team has been voted Forward Of The Week by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. This following a six point weekend in Bowling Green's WCHA Playoff quarterfinal series win versus Michigan Tech.
Max Johnson had a career best series in Bowling Green's two game sweep of rival Michigan Tech (March 8-9). The sophomore from Lakeville, Minnesota helped ignite the Falcons' comeback win on Friday (March 8) night with a goal and an assist before exploding for four more points on Saturday (March 9) night. Johnson would record an assist on BG's first goal in the third period of game one, and then score the game-winning power play goal almost two minutes later.
Game two (March 9) saw the Huskies take an early lead before the Falcons tied the game on another goal assisted by Johnson. He then scored BGSU's second goal, assisted on their third, then tallied another power play goal in the second period to extend the Falcon lead back to two. This is a career high for Max Johnson in points scored in a single series (6). Saturday (March 9) saw Max Johnson score goals 16 and 17 on the season extending his team lead, and marking his third multi-goal game of the season. Max Johnson now has 37 points on the season, tying him for second most on the roster.
This is Johnson's second WCHA weekly award of the 2018-19 season (Oct. 29) and his third career honor.
The Falcons have advanced to the WCHA semifinals for the sixth straight season, making it each year they have been a member of the conference. Their series win over Michigan Tech also marks the ninth straight year that Bowling Green has won a best-of-three playoff series. This stands as the longest active streak in a best-of-three series in the NCAA.
