Bulls answer the Falcons' game-two rally with late HR
The Bowling Green State University softball team exploded for seven first-inning runs in Saturday's (April 13) opener, coasting to a 10-2, six-inning victory over the University at Buffalo.
In the nightcap, the Falcons battled back from four runs down to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, but a solo home run in the top of the seventh lifted the Bulls to a 5-4 win and a split of the teams' doubleheader.
The BG bats banged out double-digit hit totals in each of the three games vs. Buffalo on the weekend, and the Falcons scored 23 runs in those three contests. But, the Bulls' game-two win on Saturday enabled the visitors to capture two of the three weekend games.
Senior Alex Sorgi had six hits on the afternoon, including a 4-for-5 effort in the opener, while classmate Kali Holcomb banged out five hits in the doubleheader. Three of Holcomb's hits went for extra bases, as she homered in each end of the twinbill and added a double in the nightcap.
Junior Taylor Blevins and sophomore Sarah Gonzalez each had four hits on Saturday, while soph Payton Hamm walked three times in the opener and had a pair of hits, including a game-tying single, in game two.
Senior Meredith Miller pitched 12 2/3 of the 13 innings on Saturday. She scattered seven hits in the opener, allowing two runs, then gave up only three hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief in the nightcap. Miller walked three batters and struck out 11 in the two games..
BGSU-BUFFALO GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons wasted no time in taking control of Saturday's opener, scoring seven times in the first inning.
• The Bulls put two runners on base in the top of the first, on a leadoff walk and a two-out single, but freshman Madeline Dyer made a nice stop at third base and fired to second for a force play, and starting pitcher Meredith Miller got a pair of infield popups.
• The bottom of the first saw senior Alex Sorgi lead off with an infield hit, her first of four hits in the game, before junior Taylor Blevins pushed a bunt toward the left side of the infield, putting two runners on base. One out later, senior Kellie Natham won an eight-pitch battle with UB starter Ally Power, loading the bases.
• Sophomore Payton Hamm put a ball in the air to left, with Sorgi tagging and scoring on the sacrifice fly. Then, junior Evelyn Loyola's bloop single landed just inside the foul line in shallow right, scoring Blevins, and a hard-hit ball by sophomore Sarah Gonzalez plated Natham to give BG a 3-0 lead.
• On the very next pitch, senior Kali Holcomb doubled that lead, hitting an opposite-field home run to right. The three-run blast was followed by a single up the middle by freshman Madeline Dyer, and Alex Sorgi then picked up her second single of the inning.
• Blevins followed with a bloop single to shallow center, scoring Dyer with the Falcons' seventh run of the inning.
• The Bulls got on the scoreboard with a solo homer off the bat of Catrell Robertson in the top of the second, but BG answered in the bottom of the inning.
• With one out, Hamm and Loyola drew back-to-back walks against UB reliever Damaris Sutherland. Sutherland struck out the next batter, but Holcomb lined a drive off of the Bulls' pitcher's, with the ball caroming almost all the way back to the plate. The single loaded the bases, and Dyer worked Sutherland for a run-scoring base on balls.
• UB made it an 8-2 game in the third, as Alexis Matheney led off with a single (as a BG infielder slipped while fielding the ball), and Anna Aguon hit an RBI double to the gap in left-center.
• The Falcons drew two more walks in the third, as Blevins led off with a free pass, then stole second. Sutherland struck out the next hitter, before Natham's fly ball to the deepest part of the park was caught on the warning track in straightaway center. Blevins tagged and went to third, and after a drone delay – no kidding! – Hamm drew a four-pitch walk to put runners at the corners. But, a strikeout got Sutherland out of the inning unscathed.
• Miller allowed a Robertson single and a Matheney walk in the fourth, but threw a third strike past Aguon to end the inning. Gonzalez led off the bottom of the inning with a double to the base of the wall in left, and Alex Sorgi's two-out bunt single put runners at the corners, but BG could not increase the lead.
• The fifth frame saw Gianna Zarcone (walk) and Alissa Karjel (single) reach base for the visitors, while Hamm drew her third walk of the game for the hosts, but the score remained BG 8, UB 2.
• In the sixth, Miller struck out the first two batters, and after Matheney singled up the middle, the senior got Aguon to fly out to center. Then, BG put an end to the opening game.
• Gonzalez led off with a double for the second-straight at-bat, and Holcomb reached on a single to deep short. Dyer's drive to shallow left was nearly caught by a diving Aguon, but the Bulls' leftfielder could not come up with the highlight-reel catch. Gonzalez was forced to hold at third, but Dyer's hit loaded the bases for Alex Sorgi.
• And, the senior came through with a single through the right side of the infield. Gonzalez scored easily, while Holcomb came around to score from second, giving the Falcons an eight-run lead and the walk-off win.
BGSU-BUFFALO GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• In Saturday's second game, it was the Bulls who took an early lead, with a three-run first frame. Matheney began the game with a double to left-center, and Aguon hit a liner off of BG pitcher Brooke Parker's leg. The ball caromed to second baseman Nikki Sorgi, who charged it, fielded and fired to first, but Aguon was ruled safe on a bang-bang play that put runners at the corners.
• Then, Jenelle Martinez singled to left to give UB a 1-0 lead. BG got an out on an Alicia Peters ground ball to short, with Gonzalez fielding the ball and flipping it to Dyer at third, but Gabby Keller had an RBI single up the middle, and Alissa Karjel hit a ball that caromed off of Parker and went into shallow center, scoring another run.
• Miller entered the circle and got a pair of popups to end the frame.
• Nikki Sorgi drew a four-pitch walk off of UB starter Lace Smith with two outs in the first, but the sophomore was stranded there.
• A pair of Bulls batters were hit by pitches in the second inning, but with runners at the corners, Miller got Peters to hit a fly ball to Holcomb in right field for the third out.
• Hamm led off the BG second by reaching on an infield error, and Holcomb – after hitting a drive to left that had home-run distance but went outside the foul pole – doubled to right several pitches later, moving Hamm to third. But, Smith got out of the jam, with a grounder to third and a fly ball to center.
• With one out in the third, Karjel homered to left to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead.
• The bottom of the third saw Nikki Sorgi hit a ball to the base of the wall in left for a two-out double. Natham, after hitting a drive to left that landed on top of the BG bullpen but went just foul, hit a ball to right-center that rightfielder Kassidy Aiken could not come up with. Sorgi scored on the play, putting the Falcons on the board. Hamm lined a single to left to put runners at the corners, but a Gonzalez drive to left was caught for the third out.
• Matheney's one-out flare went just over the glove of the leaping Natham near first base in the fourth, for a one-out single. Following that hit, Miller would retire the next nine Bulls. She struck out five of those nine hitters, ending the fourth, fifth and sixth frames with a K.
• On the first pitch of the BG fourth, Holcomb tattooed a Sutherland offering to straightaway center for a solo homer, her second in as many games.
• The next batter, junior Logan Everett, reached on a UB throwing error, and after Dyer's grounder resulted in a fielder's choice, BG baserunning put runners at the corners with one down.
• Alex Sorgi hit a ball to the right side of the infield. First baseman Robertson fielded the ball, but no one was covering first, and Sorgi beat Robertson to the bag on a close play. Meanwhile, Dyer rounded second and went all the way to third.
• The next hitter, Blevins, lined a ball just inside the third-base bag for a run-scoring double, as Dyer scored easily and Sorgi took third. But, with the tying run just 60 feet away, shortstop Karjel made a nice play on Nikki Sorgi's grounder, getting an out at first while holding the runners, and Natham's drive was caught in left.
• Miller, as mentioned, set the Bulls down in order in the fifth, and Gonzalez singled off of reliever Power with one out in the bottom of the fram. Everett doubled down the left-field line to put runners at second and third with two out, but Power escaped the jam, inducing a grounder to second.
• After another three-up, three-down inning for the Bulls, Alex Sorgi began the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single to the left side. Power proceeded to strike out the next two Falcons, but Sorgi then stole second, and Natham drew a walk.
• Then, Hamm came through with a two-out hit, lining a ball through the left side of the UB infield and into left field. Sorgi came around to score on the play, tying the game at 4-4.
• In the top of the seventh, Miller struck out Matheney, but Aguon hit a ball to center, with Alex Sorgi giving chase. The senior centerfielder just barely ran out of room, as the ball cleared the wall with very little room to spare for a solo homer.
• Power retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the inning to close out the win.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will hit the road for five games in Michigan next week. BG will face Detroit Mercy in a Tuesday (April 16) twinbill in the Motor City, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
