Falcons Fall to RedHawks
April 02, 2019 | Softball
Miami University took an early lead in each game, and the RedHawks went on to a doubleheader sweep of the Bowling Green State University softball team Tuesday afternoon (April 2). The Mid-American Conference twinbill was held at Meserve Field.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME ONE
• Miami broke on top when Morgan Lott's bases-loaded single scored leadoff hitter Haeley Tran. A sacrifice fly by Kara Leckinger doubled the lead, before Lily Wilmot doubled to score two more runs.
• BG cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first. Senior Alex Sorgi led off with a four-pitch walk, and junior Taylor Blevins followed with a bunt single, pushing the ball past the charging Miami third baseman. Junior Madi McCoy's fly ball to right was dropped by a RedHawk outfielder near the line, and Sorgi came around to score while Blevins reached third.
• Senior Kellie Natham followed with a line drive to center. The ball was caught, but Blevins tagged and scored easily.
• Starting pitchers Meredith Miller and Courtney Vierstra then settled into a groove, as the next three innings saw only one baserunner for each team. After Jenny Vasquez singled with two outs in the second inning, Miller then retired the next seven RedHawks. That stretch included a tremendous diving stop by third baseman Sarah Gonzales in the third, and the BG soph then threw out Johniann Wahl from her knees.
• Vierstra, however, set down seven-straight hitters as well, striking out the first five, before sophomore Nikki Sorgi banged a single through the left side of the infield to begin the fourth. But, the MU hurler retired the next three Falcons.
• The RedHawks increased the lead on a sixth-inning single by Wilmot that scored Lott, and Miami broke the game open in the seventh.
• MU scored five runs in the seventh, aided by a pair of BG errors. The six hits in that frame included an RBI triple by Jada Dotson and a base hit off the bat of Ashton Slone that resulted in two teammates crossing the plate.
• Meanwhile, after that Nikki Sorgi single in the fifth, Vierstra retired nine consecutive Falcons to end the game.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME TWO
• MU again took an early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first. Blevins made a diving catch in left to keep the visitors from adding to the lead.
• Freshman Madeline Dyer, who was inserted into the game after an injury, made a nifty diving catch of Tran's liner at third base to begin the third inning. But, with two down, a Slone walk was followed by a Wahl single, and Lott doubled to the wall in left to score both runners. Leckinger followed with a base hit that gave the visitors a four-run lead.
• Miami scored three more runs in the fourth, on a Slone homer to center field.
• BG got a run back in the bottom of the frame, as Blevins singled and stole a base. Natham walked with one out, and Nikki Sorgi singled to score Blevins.
• The Falcons put two runners on base in the fifth, when senior Kali Holcomb walked with one out and Alex Sorgi followed with a single. A Blevins grounder moved the runners along, and Dyer followed with a drive to right, but Dotson made a nice running catch to end the inning.
• In the sixth, Natham doubled to the base of the wall in left, and one out later, sophomore Payton Hamm drove a ball to the wall in left-center for a two-base hit that scored pinch-runner Kendyl Wheeler.
• Vierstra, however, entered the circle at that point, and was able to retire the next two BG batters. She walked Holcomb to begin the seventh, but then retired the side to close out the game.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons head to Muncie, Ind., this weekend, for a three-game series with MAC preseason favorite Ball State. BGSU will meet the Cardinals in a Friday (April 5) single game, beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday (April 6) doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
