April 28, 2019 | Men's Golf
Bad weather forces the finish of the MAC Championships early
Aurora, Ohio – The BGSU Men's Golf team has now concluded its 2018-19 season after the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships were suspended for Sunday April 28th due to poor course conditions and bed weather. The Falcons will finish in 5th place playing 36 holes on Saturday where they shot +26 (307-295- 602) and saw three individuals finish within the top 22. The team 5th place finish at the MAC Tournament is the best finish since the 2012-2013 season and the best finish under coach John Powers who concludes his second season with the Falcons.Â
Eastern Michigan & Kent State will share the team title with a team score of 581 each, with the Golden Flashes earning the NCAA AQ due to tiebreaker (Cumulative total of non-counting scores). Toledo finished in third place with a team score of 597 as teams three through nine were decided by 12 strokes.Â
This tournament marked the end of the careers for Pablo Heredia Iglesias, Trey Walker and Max Rispler. Iglesias had two top ten finishes in the fall campaign, finishing T-4 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate and T-10 at the Dayton Flyer Invitational. Walker, a Bowling Green native, had his best finish of the season at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate finishing T-13th with a score of 213 (71-75-67). Walker flirted with a single round scoring record after posting a 66 on the first 36 holes at the Border Olympics after shooting -6 for the first day. Rispler's best performance of the season also came at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate where he finished T-24th after shooting a +3 for the tournament (72-73-71- 216). Overall BGSU finished 4th place at the tournament for their second-best finish of the season.
In seven of the ten regular tournaments the Falcons played in this season, there was at least one Falcon that finished in the top 20. Rodrigue Vie posted the best score of any Falcon this year at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate. Vie had a total score of -1 (69-72- 141), placing him T-3 overall. Collectively, BGSU finished eighth, which was their best finish of the spring season. In six of the ten tournaments BGSU played in this year, it finished eighth or better, including finishing runner up at the Earl Yestingmeier Match Play Tournament.
Some other standout individual performances included Rodrigue Vie winning the MAC Men's Golfer of the Week on Sept. 13. Vie shot -7 over three rounds at the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational to finish fourth out of 75 golfers at the event. His 67-73-69-209 was the top BG result and he led the team to a third-place finish out of 13 teams, including defeating MAC-rival Toledo. Vie also finished T-3 at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate, shooting -1 (69-72- 141). Vie won Jet's Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season for his performance.
The All-MAC first & second teams will be announced this Thursday.
