Follow the Falcons This Summer
May 20, 2019 | Men's Soccer
A total of 15 BGSU returnees are playing at a stadium near you
Bowling Green State University men's soccer fans who can't wait to see the team in action this fall can get their fix a few months early. No fewer than 15 of the team's returning players will be playing for a USL League Two or National Premier Soccer League team this summer.
Six Falcons will be playing in the NPSL, with five of those six on the Toledo Villa FC roster. That quintet includes rising seniors Amandy Ayima and Tom Wrobel, along with Colin McCort, Kale Nichols and Alec Srodawa, all of whom will be entering their second year on the BGSU roster in the fall. The head coach of Toledo Villa FC is former Falcon Colin Armstrong.
Rising junior Vinny Worner also will be participating in the NPSL, playing for Cleveland SC.
Nine Falcons will be taking their talents to USL League Two. Four players – Zach Buescher, Jensen Lukacsko, Achille Robin and Matt Walters – will be playing for the Dayton Dutch Lions.
Just a short drive south, rising senior Charlie Maciejewski will suit up for the Cincinnati Dutch Lions.
Two Falcons, rising senior Anthony Mwembia and junior-to-be Chris Sullivan, will be playing for Chicago FC United, while sophomore Ike Swiger is a member of West Virginia Alliance FC.Â
Rising senior Chris Brennan will play for the Charlotte Eagles this summer, where he will be coached by former Falcon Garrett Bireline in Charlotte.
USL League Two (USL2), formerly the Premier Development League (PDL), features 74 franchises in four conferences throughout the United States and Canada, including 18 clubs that are owned and operated by a professional club, or that hold a partnership with a professional club. More than 70 percent of all selections in the MLS SuperDraft since 2010 have had PDL experience, including 66 selections in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.
The Charlotte Eagles are in the Southern Conference, in the Deep South Division. In the Central Conference, four of the five teams in the Great Lakes Division – Chicago FC United, Cincinnati Dutch Lions, Dayton Dutch Lions and West Virginia Alliance FC – all have a member of the 2019 men's soccer Falcons on the roster.Â
The League Two season consists of 14 regular season matches for each team, seven home and seven away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility.
The National Premier Soccer League has a total of 91 teams in four different regions in 2019. Both Toledo Villa FC and Cleveland SC compete in the Midwest Region, with Villa part of the Great Lakes Conference while Cleveland SC resides in the East Conference. At the conclusion of the regular-season schedule, the top-two teams in each conference will be part of the six-team Midwest Region playoffs. The champion will advance to the NPSL semifinals, along with the winners of the other three regions.
