Tennis To Open Season With BGSU Invitational During Homecoming Weekend

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis program will return to the court to kickoff their 2019-20 season on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14 by hosting the BGSU Invitational. This year's invitational will feature Toledo, Oakland, Oberlin, Tiffin, Findlay and Northern Illinois in addition the Bowling Green. Action on both Friday and Saturday will begin at 8:30 a.m. and run through the duration of the day.Â
The Falcons will be led by two seniors this season, being Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Ayumi Sasaki. Last year, Tavpash posted an 11-8 singles record, including being 6-3 at No. 2 singles and receiving experience at first singles. As for Sasaki, she was 11-9 in singles play, playing predominantly at fourth singles, going 10-8.
Bowling Green will also feature a duo of juniors with Marta Bettinelli and transfer Yulia Kapitanova. Bettinelli was a key cog in the Falcons' success a year ago, playing at fourth, fifth and sixth singles at different points in the season, including a 1-0 record at fourth singles. Kapitanova comes to BG from Hampton University where she played first singles in all 17 matches during the 2018-19 season.Â
The lone sophomore in the Orange and Brown this season will be Laura Silveira who saw most of her action last year come via doubles play. However, in singles Silveira posted a 2-1 record, including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at fifth singles against Indiana Tech.Â
The Falcons will also welcome two freshmen to the team this year. Maria Jose (Majo) Magro comes to Bowling Green from Mexico City, Mexico while Joanna Tsadari joines from Athens, Greece.Â
BGSU is coming off of a 10-10 season on the tennis courts during the 2018-19 season, including a 3-4 showing during conference play within the MAC. From that team, Polina Radeva, Vanesa Pardo and Paula Comella graduated, but Comella has returned to the team as an Assistant Coach.Â
