Tennis Begins 2019-20 Season With Day One Of BGSU Invitational

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis program opened their 2019-20 season on Friday (Sept. 13) by hosting the BGSU Invitational, featuring Northern Illinois, Toledo, Oakland, Oberlin, Findlay and Tiffin in addition to the Falcons. Play will resume on Saturday (Sept. 14) morning at 8:30 a.m.

Orange Bracket (Singles)
Round of 16
- Following a transfer to Bowling Green from Hampton University, junior Yulia Kapitanova kicked off the Falcons' season, claiming a straight set victory, 6-2, 6-4, over Tiffin's Emily Sim, advancing to the Quarterfinals of the Orange Bracket.
- Senior Marharita-Sophia Tavpash received a bye in the first round of the bracket.
- Kapitanova continued her stellar debut in the Orange and Brown by defeating Toledo's Eileen Carney, 6-3 and 7-6 (4) to advance to the semifinals.Â
- Tavpash was opposed by Finday's Laiying Alvarado in the quarterfinals for her first match of the season. Putting up a strong fight, Tavpash came up short, falling 6-3 in both sets with Alvarado moving on.Â
- Tomorrow, Kapitanova will go against Northern Illinois' Maria Potsi for a chance to advance to the finals, being one of many BGSU v. NIU matches of the day.Â
Brown Bracket (Singles)
Round of 16
- Freshman Joanna Tsadari began her career with Bowling Green on Friday, taking on Oakland's Nirva Patel in the Round of 16 in the Brown Bracket. After falling in the first set 6-2, Tsadari fought back to take the second set 6-3 and the third set 6-1 to advance to Quarterfinals.Â
- Senior Ayumi Sasaki received a bye in the first round, advancing to the Quarterfinals.
- Carrying over her momentum from the Round of 16, Tsadari topped Toledo's Patricia Panta in straights sets, winning both 6-4, to advance to the Semifinals.
- Sasaki's first match of the day came against Tiffin's Anais Geslin with Sasaki claiming the victory. A 6-2 first set gave her the advantage before closing the deal with a dominant 6-1 second set.Â
- Tsadari will face Northern Illinois' Julia Dmitrieva tomorrow with the opportunity to advance to the Brown Bracket finals.
- As for Sasaki, she will go up against Northern Illinois' Paula Veyhle tomorrow, making for an all MAC semifinals in the Brown Bracket.Â
Freddie Bracket (Singles)
Round of 16
- The lone BGSU participant in this bracket, junior Marta Bettinelli advanced to the quarterfinals, receiving a bye in the first round.
- In the quarterfinals, Bettinelli came up short against Oakland's Samantha Galloway, falling in straight sets to the Golden Grizzlies' senior.
Frieda Bracket (Singles)
Round of 16
- Sophomore Laura Silveira began play for BGSU in the Frieda Bracket, facing Oberlin's Maja Shaw and winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
- Freshman Maria Jose (Majo) Magro received a bye in the first round of the bracket.
- Silveira took on Toledo's Laura Morera in the quarterfinals after Morera received a first round bye. In two sets, Morera topped Silveira.Â
- Magro went up against Oakland's Chelsea Dzenga in the quarterfinals round, becoming the only Falcon match to go to three sets on the day. After taking the first set 7-5, Magro nearly took the second as well with a final of 7-6 (7) before Dzenga clinched the match in the third set 6-3.
Grit Bracket (Doubles)
Round of 16
- Starting the doubles play for the Falcons on the year was the duo of Tavpash and Bettinelli, defeating Oberlin's duo of Black and Nouaime by a score of 6-2.
- Another Falcon duo, Kapitanova and Sasaki, received a bye in the first round.
- Tavpash and Bettinelli then faced Northern Illinois' Dmitrieva and Peric, winning 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
- Kapitanova and Sasaki's first doubles together came against Northern Illinois' Potsi and Veyhle with a final score of 6-3, favoring the BGSU duo.
- Matchups are still undecided for both duos, but both will have an opportunity to advance to the finals.
Fight Bracket (Doubles)
Round of 16
- Silveira and Magro paired up for Bowling Green in the Fight Bracket, receiving a bye in the first round to advance.
- Due to odd roster numbers, Tsadari was paired with Tiffin's Dominique Matich-Reynolds, facing Findlay's duo of Lightly and Nieto, advancing with a 6-4 victory.
- Silveira and Magro's opposition has yet to be decided for the quarterfinal round.
- Tsadari and Matich-Reynolds will go against Tiffin's Brown and Young.Â
