BG Gives Central a Scare in 82-75 Saturday Setback
February 15, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Falcons rally from 16 down against MAC leader
The Bowling Green women's basketball team gave league-leading Central Michigan a scare on Saturday (Feb. 15), coming all the way back from a double-digit deficit, but the Chippewas ultimately escaped with an 82-75 win in Mid-American Conference action in Mount Pleasant.
BGSU trailed by as many as 16 points, but the Falcons rallied all the way back, taking the lead on a three-point play by Caterrion Thompson with 4:03 to go. The Chippewas (19-4, 12-0 MAC) responded with a Molly Davis three-pointer, however, to regain the lead for good.
Thompson came off the bench to score 20 points, pacing four double-figure scorers for the Falcons. Junior Angela Perry had a double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Perry tied for game honors in the latter category.
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling was 8-for-12 from the field en route to 17 points, and she added nine rebounds and four assists. Junior Madisen Parker, like Thompson, hit three three-pointers on the day, and Parker finished with 11 points.

TICKETS FOR REMAINING HOME GAMES
Kyra Bussell had a game-high 23 points as the Chippewas won for the 19th time in the last 20 games after an 0-3 start to the season. Bussell hit five of Central's 16 three-pointers, as the Chips attempted 40 shots from beyond the arc.
Micaela Kelly had 19 points and 10 rebounds, for the hosts, while Davis added 17 and Maddy Watters 15.
BGSU had a higher field-goal percentage (46.0% to Central's 42.9%), the Falcons outrebounded the Chippewas, 40-38, and the Orange and Brown had a 40-22 lead in points in the paint.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This time of the year separates teams. It's a grind, and you can see teams go one of two ways. Today, I thought, was a great indicator of our team playing better, tougher and more together. We did more things right, and we gave ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter.
"We've still got to get better, but I thought our execution of the game plan was excellent, our togetherness was excellent, and we're gonna keep working."
FIRST QUARTER
• Back-to-back three-pointers by Micaela Kelly and Watters gave the Chippewas an 8-2 lead just over two minutes in.
• Hempfling, who scored BG's first six points, answered with a driving, spinning bucket and a Euro-step layup, but Kelly scored CMU's next five points, answering a Perry bucket with her second triple of the day to give Central a 13-8 lead.
• Perry scored again after receiving a lob from Parker, and Thompson knocked down a corner three to get BG within a bucket. But, a steal resulted in a Davis layup, and Bussell connected from the top of the arc. Senior Clare Glowniak's offensive rebound resulted in a nifty floater by Thompson as the first-quarter horn sounded, and BG trailed by a 20-15 score.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Chippewas came out on fire to begin the second period, scoring the first eight points as part of a 13-2 run. Davis hit a pair of triples, and Watters scored in the paint.
• Freshman Elissa Brett's mid-range jumper snapped BG's second-quarter scoreless slide, but Watters hit a three-ball, and a Micaela Kelly layup gave Central a 16-point lead, the largest of the game, midway through the period.
• Neither team scored for nearly two minutes, but BG then went on a 6-0 run. Hempfling found Perry for a turnaround banker out of the media timeout, and a slick Hempfling touch pass led to another Perry bucket off glass. Then, Hempfling worked down low and scored to cut the CMU lead to 10, but Watters answered with a right-side three.
• Thompson hit a corner three, and moments later, a Brett three-point play put BG within nine at the 1:48 mark. Bussell answered with a jumper, but Thompson's left-wing triple try bounced in, making it a 40-32 game. But, the Chippewas scored five of the last six points of the quarter, with Micaela Kelly's driving layup in the final seconds giving Central a 45-33 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• While it was Central coming out hot to start the second period, BG was en fuego to begin the third. A Hempfling offensive board kept the opening possession alive, and led to a three-point play for Perry. Then, Hempfling fired the ball inside to Perry for another bucket.
• Micaela Kelly hit a three, but Hempfling worked her way inside and converted, and Perry lobbed the ball to Hempfling for a nifty layup from underneath the hoop. When Parker knocked down a long-distance shot from the left wing, CMU's lead was down to three, 48-45, and the Chippewas used a timeout.
• The Falcons were 5-of-6 from the floor during that quarter-opening 12-3 run.
• And, BG got a stop and Hempfling scored inside, making it a one-point game at the 6:03 mark. But, Bussell responded with a triple. Thompson hit a runner, but Sophia Karasinski knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, extending Central's lead to eight at 57-49.
• BG slowly chipped away at the Chippewa lead, and the Falcons scored the last seven points of the quarter. Perry hit a turnaround shot, Thompson drained a floater, and Mari Hill drove the baseline and kicked the ball to Parker for a corner three.
• Trailing by a 59-57 score, the Falcons got a stop, and BG had a chance to tie or take the lead before the end of the period, but an illegal screen was called away from the ball, and possession went back to Central. The Falcons got another defensive stop, however, as Karasinski's shot from the corner hit the side of the backboard.
FOURTH QUARTER
• CMU quickly scored a pair of buckets to take a six-point lead, but Hill found Hempfling out top for a triple that cut that lead in half. Hill's foul-line jumper brought the Falcons within a single point, at 63-62, with 7:50 to go.
• The teams traded buckets, with Perry hitting a layup, but moments later, Bussell knocked down a triple. Two Thompson charity tosses out of the media timeout cut the CMU lead in half, at 68-66, and after Micaela Kelly's three-point try was off the mark, Brett rebounded the ball and the next possession saw Thompson hit an and-one layup. Her free throw gave the Falcons the lead for the first time all day, 69-68, with 4:03 to go.
• But, Davis responded immediately with a three-pointer to give the hosts a two-point advantage. BG turned the ball over on the next two possessions, but the Falcons forced CMU misses at the other end of the court.
• A BG three-pointer was no good, but the Chips misfired on a pair of three's on the next trip down the court. A Falcon layup in traffic would not drop, and Bussell hit a corner three with 1:18 on the clock, giving CMU a 74-69 lead. Then, a turnover led to a transition layup by Davis and a seven-point Central lead with just under a minute remaining.
• The Falcons got within six points on two occasions during that final minute, but the Chippewas made just enough free throws to keep a multiple-possession lead over the remainder of the contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• The Falcons shot 46.0% from the field, including a 10-of-17 performance (58.8%) in the third quarter and a 15-of-28 rate in the second half. CMU shot 42.9% from the field.
• The Chippewas hit 16 three-pointers, taking 40 shots from outside the arc on the day. Central's 40% long-range success rate was slightly better than BG's 38.9% mark, as the Falcons were 7-for-18 from long distance.
• BGSU went 10-of-14 (71.4%) at the free-throw line, including a 6-for-7 performance in the fourth quarter. CMU was 6-of-10 at the stripe, with all 10 tosses coming in that final quarter.
• The Falcons held a 40-38 rebounding advantage, and BG had a 20-8 lead in bench scoring and a 40-22 lead in points in the paint.
