Gottshall throws another one-hitter; Dees & Loyola combine to reach base seven times
The Bowling Green State University softball team opened the weekend with a 7-1 win over host Tennessee State University Friday night, in day-one action at the Tiger Classic in Nashville.
The Falcons, now 3-3 on the young season, pounded out 12 hits in the win, and freshman Payton Gottshall threw a complete-game one-hitter.
Eight of the nine players in the BGSU lineup had at least one hit in the victory, and eight of the Falcons' starting nine scored and/or drove in at least one run.
NOTEWORTHY
• For the second consecutive weekend, Gottshall threw a complete-game one-hitter and recorded a double-digit strikeout total. On Friday, the Falcon freshman struck out 11 batters while walking three.
• As was the case in her other one-hitter – which also came in BG's opening game of a weekend against a Tennessee-based school – the lone hit Gottshall allowed was a solo home run.
• Redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees was 3-for-4 with a double in Friday's win. For Dees, it was the fifth three-hit game of her Falcon career, with the other four all coming during the 2018 season.
• Senior Taylor Blevins had the second triple of her BGSU career. She has had a three-base hit on each of the last two Fridays.
• Blevins has had at least one hit in each of this season's six games.
• Fellow senior Logan Everett drove in a run on Friday evening, her team-leading seventh RBI of the season. Everett had three RBI during all of last season, and she drove in a total of 16 runs during her first three seasons.
• Senior Evelyn Loyola reached base in all four of her plate appearances vs. the Tigers. Loyola was 2-for-2 with two walks and a two-run double.
BGSU-TSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• TSU starter Raven Loveless set the Falcons down in order in the top of the first, and the Tigers threatened to take an early lead against Gottshall in the bottom of the frame. The hosts loaded the bases with one out after a hit batter and a pair of walks. But, the BG freshman got a ground ball that led to a force play at the plate, then struck out Savanah Wallace to end the threat.
• BG took the lead in the second, as Dees doubled with one out, junior Payton Hamm walked and Everett singled up the middle to plate Dees. Loyola walked to load the bases, but Loveless escaped further damage as a line drive was caught by the first baseman. before the TSU hurler got an inning-ending strikeout.
• Katie Schneider led off the home half of the inning with a strikeout, but Gottshall responded by striking out the next two hitters, then inducing a foul pop that was caught by catcher Loyola.
• And, in the third, BG took the lead for good. Senior Madi McCoy singled with one down, took second on a grounder and scored on a Dees base hit. That Dees RBI would prove to be the game winner.
• Gottshall walked Sarah Snell to begin the bottom of the third, but after she retired the next two, Loyola threw out Snell attempting to steal second base.
• The Falcons scored three times in the fifth inning. With one out, Loyola walked for the second time in the game, and junior Sarah Gonzalez followed with a single. Then, Blevins laced a triple to left-center, scoring both runners and chasing Loveless from the game.
• Lauren Powell got Falcon freshman Greta L'Esperance to hit a grounder to short, but Blevins scored on the play to give BG a 5-1 lead.
• Gottshall set down the side in order in each of the last four innings, with six strikeouts in that time.
• Meanwhile, the Falcons added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Junior Nikki Sorgi led off with a single, and after a fielder's-choice grounder to short, Hamm singled up the middle. With two down, Loyola doubled to center to score both pinch-runner Montana Jones and Hamm.
• In the bottom of the inning, Gottshall struck out Rebeca Melton, pinch-hitter Marisa Mauroschadt and Schneider to close out the victory.
