BGSU downs CCSU in 8 innings & Rider in 5
After going to extra innings to pick up a victory Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22), the Bowling Green softball team needed just five frames to capture a second win in the evening. The Falcons posted a 4-3 win over Central Connecticut State before earning an 8-0, run-rule win over Rider.
Both games were part of the Tiger Classic, hosted by Tennessee State.
BGSU is now 3-0 on the weekend after Friday's 7-1 win over the host school, and the Falcons are 5-3 on the young season.
NOTEWORTHY
• Freshman Payton Gottshall picked up both wins in the circle to run her record to 5-2 on the year. Gottshall came on in relief vs. CCSU, striking out both batters she faced, before throwing a four-hit shutout against Rider.
• The latter game marked the first shutout of her young collegiate career.
• Gottshall had eight strikeouts vs. the Broncs and now has a total of 57 on the year, in 36 2/3 innings.
• Junior Nikki Sorgi and redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees each had two hits to pace an eight-hit BG attack in the opener. For Dees, both hits were doubles.
• For the first time all season, senior Taylor Blevins was held without a hit in the CCSU game. Blevins, who walked twice and scored a run in that victory, had a hit and scored twice in Saturday's second game.
• In BGSU's eight-run win over Rider, the Falcons had just four hits – all singles. The Broncs had four hits in the game as well.
• BG batters walked four times in the opener, and the Falcons drew seven walks in game two. In the Rider game, BG saw two batters get hit by pitches, and the Falcons benefited from five Rider errors, two wild pitches and three passed balls.
• In the fourth inning of the win over Rider, BGSU sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four times, but did not have a hit.
BGSU-CCSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons used three pitchers in the opener, with all three pitching effectively. Junior Madison French drew the start, her first of the season and the third of her career, and worked the first five innings.
• French retired the first six batters she faced, striking out three.
• Meanwhile, BGSU took the lead in the bottom of the first. Blevins walked, stole second and took third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Greta L'Esperance. Then, senior Madi McCoy's single plated Blevins.
• In the second inning, senior Evelyn Loyola doubled with one out off of CCSU pitcher Meg Dugas. Pinch-runner Summer Callahan took third on a wild pitch with two outs, and after a Blevins walk, a L'Esperance bunt single plated Callahan.
• French hit the leadoff batter with a pitch in the third inning, and a sac bunt and a fly ball to right put a runner on third base before Rian Eigenmann's base hit put the Blue Devils on the board.
• The Falcons got that run right back. McCoy walked and Dees sacrificed her to second. Sorgi singled to put runners at the corners, and McCoy scored on a throwing error by the catcher as Sorgi stole second.
• French set down the side in order in the fourth, but CCSU would tie the game in the fifth. A walk, a sac bunt and a wild pitch put a runner on third with one down. A ground ball to short resulted in an out at the plate, but back-to-back doubles by Meg Gorman and Eigenmann each scored a run and enabled the Blue Devils to tie the game at three.
• BG got a Dees double in the home half of the fifth, but could not advance her past second.
• Sophomore Hannah Davies entered the circle to begin the sixth. After allowing a leadoff walk, she retired the next seven batters she faced.
• Pinch-hitter Montana Jones drew a walk in the BG sixth, and the freshman made it as far as third base after senior Logan Everett's sacrifice and a fly ball to right. But, Dugas got out of the inning with another fly ball.
• In the top of the eighth, Dugas looked to aid her own cause, with a one-out double. That was the only hit Davies allowed in her 2 1/3 innings of work.
• Gottshall entered the circle and proceeded to strike out both Kaitlin Paterson and Carli Backlund. And, BG walked it off in the bottom of the inning.
• Dees led off with a double, her second of the game, and Sorgi bunted pinch-runner Sophie Bosket to third. Then, Hamm singled up the middle to plate the freshman and give the Falcons the victory.
BGSU-RIDER – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BG broke on top quickly. Blevins led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on McCoy's single up the middle.
• The Broncs got a one-out single followed by a walk in the home half of the first, but Gottshall struck out Chaela Crowder and got Lani Moreno to ground out. Then, she struck out the side in the second.
• After issuing that first-inning walk, the Falcon freshman retired eight-straight batters.
• In the third inning, BG saw a single erased by a caught stealing. But, with two outs and no one on base, the Falcons manufactured three runs. L'Esperance walked, and McCoy singled. After a wild pitch, Dees walked to load the bases, and a passed ball scored L'Esperance.
• Loyola walked to reload the bases, and Sorgi drew a walk that scored McCoy. Then, Dees crossed the plate on another wild pitch.
• BG blew the game wide open in the fourth. Rider starting pitcher Elyse Cuttic was replaced by Jackie Cal, who hit both Hamm and junior Sarah Gonzalez with pitches. Then, both Blevins and L'Esperance reached on infield errors, with two runs scoring on the latter play. One out later, Dees walked to load the bases, and another walk to Loyola allowed Blevins to cross the plate. A dropped infield fly resulted in BG's final run.
• Back-to-back singles put a pair of runners on for the Broncs in the fourth, but a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play retired the lead runner, and a popup to first got Gottshall out of the inning.
• BG threatened to add to the lead in the fifth, as a strikeout/wild pitch and and error put two runners aboard, and a throwing error with two outs put those runners in scoring position. But, Cal got a fly ball to center to end the threat.
• Cal singled to lead off the Rider fifth, and a fielder's choice put runners at first and second with one down. But, a ground ball back to the circle resulted in a force at third, and McCoy gloved a foul pop to end the game and give BG the run-rule win.
