Falcons' season comes to a close in Kalamazoo
The Bowling Green women's basketball team saw the 2019-20 season come to an end on Monday night (March 9), as the Falcons fell, 84-67, at Western Michigan. The game, a Mid-American Conference first-round contest, was held at University Arena.
Junior Angela Perry paced three double-digit scorers vs. the Broncos. Perry, one of the nation's leaders in field-goal percentage, went 7-for-11 from the floor en route to a team-high 16 points.
Freshmen Elissa Brett and Olivia Trice combined for 26 points. Brett had a double-double, with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. She set a new career rebounding standard for the second-straight game. Trice scored 10 points off the bench.
Jordan Walker and the Broncos were hot from long range on Monday night. Walker had a game-high 21 points as all five Western starters hit double digits, and she hit a game-high five three-pointers.
The Broncos made 15 shots from the arc on the night, including 11 in the first half. Walker hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter to give the hosts an eight-point lead.
Western led by nine, 31-22, after a Trice jumper midway through the second quarter, but the Broncos ended the half on a 16-4 run. Kamrin Reed and Reilly Jacobson each hit long-distance shots in the final 1:16 of the half, and a Sydney Shafer triple at the buzzer gave the hosts a 21-point lead at the intermission.
The Falcons' deficit was 20 points after senior Jane Uecker went around her would-be defender for a layup midway through the third, but another run by the hosts extended the margin to a game-high 32 points late in the period.
BGSU outscored the Broncos, 21-9, in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to make a significant dent in the home team's lead. BG cut that 32-point deficit in half before a late free throw provided the final 17-point margin.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"A lot of credit to Western Michigan; I thought they played really well. They shot the ball well tonight. I give our kids a lot of credit, too. I thought we continued to fight, especially in the fourth quarter. That's something we've rallied around all year and I've trusted about them all year, that they will continue to fight."
"Our seniors have left the program better than they found it. They've done so many things for our culture and for our work ethic."
"Moving forward, this is motivating for us to continue to improve. I'm grateful for this team, and I'm grateful that I got to coach them this season."
FIRST QUARTER
• Both teams struggled to make shots in the early going. The game was scoreless until BG's third possession, when fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson hit a transition layup after a long pass from sophomore Kadie Hempfling.
• Jordan Walker hit back-to-back three-pointers, but freshman Elissa Brett answered with an offensive rebound and a floater. Brett would score seven-straight BG points, getting a jumper to drop, then hitting a right-wing three-ball to get the Falcons within four points, at 13-9.
• Chelayne Bailey's second three of the night was answered by Hempfling, as she took a pass from Brett and knocked down a shot from the top of the arc. Hempfling's contested banker made it a four-point game once again, but Western sandwiched two more three-pointers around junior Madisen Parker's pull-up jumper. Walker's triple in the waning seconds of the quarter gave the hosts a 24-16 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Freshman Olivia Trice hit a smooth foul-line jumper, and after Kamrin Reed answered with a trey, junior Angela Perry's leaner cut the Western lead to 27-20.
• But, Leighah-Amori Wool and Breanna Mobley each scored, and after another pull-up jumper by Trice, the Broncos went on a 7-0 run. Sydney Shafer hit a three-ball, and Mobley's putback made it a 38-22 game.
• Trice drove and found Perry for a layup, but Reed hit a corner three. Perry scored again on a turnaround one-hander, but Reilly Jacobson answered with a triple, and Shafer beat the buzzer with a corner trey to give Western a 47-26 lead.
THIRD QUARTER
• Late in the shot clock, Parker found Brett for a corner three, and Hempfling's drive and kick resulted in a straightaway trey from Trice. BG trailed by 18 at that point, but Walker scored five quick points for the hosts.
• Hempfling answered with a long-range make, senior Jane Uecker turnstiled Mobley for a layup, and Thompson absorbed some contact and banked a shot home. But, the Broncos had an answer for each BG basket, and the hosts then went on a 13-2 run to extend the lead to a game-high 32 points.
• Perry and Brett hit layups in the final two minutes of the period, and Parker was fouled on a long shot attempt with 0.4 seconds on the clock and made all three free throws to cap the third-period scoring.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Trailing by 29, the Falcons scored the first seven points of the final quarter. Thompson found Perry for a bucket, after Thompson had kept the possession alive by knocking the ball off of a Western player and out of bounds after a BG miss.
• Then, Thompson grabbed a defensive rebound and took the ball all the way downcourt for a nifty stop-and-go layup. She then took a Parker pass with BG running, and knocked down a three-pointer from the right side.
• Mobley put back a miss, but Brett and Perry each hit two free throws to make it a 78-57 game.
• Trice blocked a Western shot and grabbed the rebound, and some tenacious rebounding at the other end kept a possession going, and resulted in a Trice triple from the top of the arc.
• When Thompson found Perry for a bucket, the Falcons had cut the lead to 17, at 81-64. But, time was not on the Falcons' side, as only four minutes remained.
• BG got a Parker triple – her school-record 98th of the season – in the final minute of play to cut the deficit to 16, before a Western free throw provided the final margin. Parker's trey came after an offensive rebound by Uecker.
