August 31, 2020 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green, Ohio -- Over the past week, we asked our fans to vote for their favorite student-athletes of the past 20 years. Beginning today, we will reveal one at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 25 pick for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, gymnastics national champion Marny Oestreng!
25. Marny Oestreng (1999-2002)
Â
A native of Trogsted, Norway, Oestreng's historic career as a gymnast at BGSU resonates to this day.
Â
A former NCAA champion, Oestreng held every school record in every individual event upon her graduation. She retains marks of 39.600 in the all-around, 9.975 in the floor exercise, 9.950 in the uneven bars, and 9.950 in the vault. Her 9.925 on balance beam still ranks fourth (behind a pair of 9.950 scores from Laura Mitchell and one from Jovannah East).
Â
Her dominating collegiate run began as a freshman in 1999, where she won the NCAA title in the floor exercise after being the first gymnast in school history to even qualify for the national meet. This came after a series of brilliant performances in the MAC, where she made history by winning more than three individual league titles. She qualified for the World Gymnastics Championships in October of 1999 in China after winning the all-around title at the Norwegian Championships in June.
Â
Oestreng captured the league title in the all-around (39.450) and vault (9.875) in her sophomore year, before tying for the league's best scores in the all-around (39.150) and the bars (9.875).
Â
As a senior, Oestreng led the Falcons to one of the best regular season records in school history at 17-1, while tying for first in the MAC Championships in the all-around (39.175) and the floor (9.900). She also earned MAC Senior Gymnast of the Year.
