THE WEEK AHEAD
MEN'S BASKETBALL (10-3, 6-1 MAC)
Tuesday, Jan. 19 vs. Akron, 7:00 pm | ESPN+ | Radio | Live Stats | @BGSUMHoops
Thursday, Jan. 21 at Miami (Ohio), 5:30 pm | ESPN3/+ | Radio | Live Stats | @BGSUMHoops
The Falcons picked up a huge road win last Friday (Jan. 15) at Buffalo to move back into first place within the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green will begin another two-game week by hosting Akron inside the Stroh Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 19). BGSU will then head to Oxford just two days later on Jan. 21 to make up a game against the RedHawks. Bowling Green enters play this week with a 10-3 overall record. The Falcons are 6-1 in league play. Fifth-year senior Justin Turner has scored 1,868 points in 107 games at Bowling Green. He needs just 71 points to become BGSU's all-time leading scorer. With 28 points, Turner will move into second place all-time, surpassing Falcon legend and former NBA guard Keith McLeod (1998-2002 | 1,895 points). Fellow seniors Trey Diggs and Daeqwon Plowden are each averaging 11.4 points in 2020-21 for the Orange and Brown.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (9-3, 5-2 MAC)
Wednesday, Jan. 20 vs. Akron, 7:00 pm | ESPN3/+ | Radio | Live Stats | @BGSUWbb
Saturday, Jan. 23 at Miami, 1:00 pm | ESPN+ | Radio | Live Stats | @BGSUWbb
The women's basketball Falcons, after beginning the month of January with four road games in a five-game stretch, will end the month by playing three of four contests at the Stroh, beginning Wednesday night. Akron comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. tip, and it will be BG's "Unity Game" as BGSU continues the pursuit for equity and social progress. Then, BG will head back out on the road to face Miami Saturday afternoon. Last week, the Falcons dropped a narrow decision at Buffalo before going to Toledo and coming away with a victory over the arch-rival Rockets. BG led UT by 21 points with three minutes to go, before a late surge narrowed the final margin to 12 points, 69-57. Freshman Kenzie Lewis pulled down a BGSU season-best and career-high 15 rebounds, while classmate Lexi Fleming led BG and tied for game honors with 21 points vs. the Midnight Blue and Gold. With five MAC wins, BGSU has matched the team's total for the last two seasons combined. Heading into the 2020-21 season, the Falcons had won three MAC road games by 10 points or more in the last six years, but BG has now posted three double-digit MAC road victories in the last two weeks. Kadie Hempfling, after roughly two-and-a-half seasons in a Falcon uniform, has moved into a tie for 10th place on the BGSU career assists list, with 297. She is just three away from becoming the second player in program history with both 500 career rebounds and 300 career assists. The other? Kate Achter -- perhaps you've heard of her? (She's listed at the very top of this page). Each of this week's games are slated to be streamed via ESPN3 or ESPN+, with BGRSO calling both the UA and MU games as well.
#8 HOCKEY (14-2-0, 3-1-0-0 WCHA)
Thursday, Jan. 21 at Bemidji State, 6:07 pm | FloHockey | Radio | Live Stats | @BGFalconHockey
Friday, Jan. 22 at Bemidji State, 3:07 pm | FloHockey | Radio | Live Stats | @BGFalconHockey
After capturing the program's 1,000th win this past week, the Falcons will set out this coming weekend to start working towards 2,000 wins. The schedule will take the Orange and Brown up to Bemidji State for a two-game non-conference series. Bowling Green and Bemidji State just recently faced off a couple weekends ago, splitting the series that was played at the Slater Family Ice Arena. Heading into the game, the Falcons will be paced by the late surge of Will Cullen. Cullen totaled five points last weekend against Northern Michigan and now leads the nation in points by a defensemen with 16. In net, the duo of Eric Dop and Zack Rose has been stellar for Bowling Green, with both being in the top 15 in the nation among all goalie statistics, and will look to carry that into this series.Â
TRACK & FIELD
Friday, Jan. 22 vs. Toledo - Bowling Green Opener, 5:00 pm | Meet Information/Schedule of Events | Live Results | @BG_XCTrack
Bowling Green and Toledo will meet in the annual dual meet between the programs Friday at Perry Field House, beginning with field events at 5:00 pm and running events at 6:00 pm. A year ago, BGSU won 9-of-13 events on the way to a 79-57 win over the Rockets. BGSU opened the season this past weekend, winning four events at home in the BG Opener against MAC opponents Miami, Northern Illinois and Ball State. Ryen Draper is currently first in the MAC in the 200, while Katherine Mendenhall (high jump), Zaresha Neal (shot put) and the 1600 relay team all sit second in the conference. For Toledo, it will be the season opener.
VOLLEYBALL (0-0, 0-0 MAC)
Friday, Jan. 22 vs. Northern Illinois, 6:00 pm | ESPN3/+ | Radio | Live Stats | @BGSUVolleyball
Saturday, Jan. 23 vs. Northern Illinois, 5:00 pm | ESPN3/+ | Radio | Live Stats | @BGSUVolleyball
The BGSU Volleyball team will kickoff their spring 2021 campaign by hosting Northern Illinois this weekend at the Stroh Center. The Falcons will enter the season with four seniors who will lead the Orange and Brown through a 22-game schedule. Last season, Bowling Green advanced as far as the MAC Championship match while also capturing a postseason victory in the NIVC Tournament. While building on that success, the Falcons will be looking to take the next step this season and capture their first MAC title since the 2012 season. Individually, Katie Kidwell paces the Falcons statistically with a chance to become the program's all-time leader in block assists by the season's close.Â
GYMNASTICS (0-1, 0-0 MAC)
Sunday, Jan. 24 at Eastern Michigan, 1:00 pm | Live Stats | @FalconGymn
Bowling Green will hit the mats for the second time this year when the Falcons compete at Eastern Michigan Sunday. BGSU opened the season by scoring 190.550 in a loss to Kent State, while Eastern Michigan is off to a 2-0 start after scoring a 194.300 in a three-way meet with Temple and Towson. BGSU sophomore Taylor Jensen won the all-around competition against Kent State, while Elena Lawson posted the team's top individual score, a 9.800 on vault.
MEN'S SOCCER (0-0, 0-0 MAC)
Saturday, Jan. 23 at Xavier, 1:00 pm (Scrimmage)
The Falcons head to Cincinnati for a Saturday scrimmage with Xavier at the XU Soccer Complex, with first touch set for 1:00 p.m. BGSU has not played against another school in nearly 11 months (the Falcons played one match of last year's spring schedule, at Cleveland State on March 7, 2020), and it has been 14 months since BGSU wrapped up the 2019 season by advancing to the MAC Tournament's championship match. BG closed the 2019 campaign with an overall record of 13-7-1. The Falcons and Musketeers are scheduled to play four 30-minute periods in Saturday's scrimmage.
