January 13, 2021 | Women's Basketball
Hempfling leads BG with a career-high 20 points
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Dyaisha Fair scored 15 of her game-high 36 points in the third quarter as the University at Buffalo defeated the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, 82-74, Wednesday evening (Jan. 13). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Alumni Arena.
The Falcons (8-3, 4-2 MAC) led by four points at the half, but Fair was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range in the third quarter alone, giving the hosts (8-3, 5-1 MAC) a five-point advantage, 57-52.
BGSU crept as close as two points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but could not draw even with the hosts in that final period.
Junior Kadie Hempfling (pictured above) led the Falcons with a career-high 20 points, while freshman Lexi Fleming had 18. That duo combined for 16 rebounds as well, as Helping led BG with nine boards and Hempfling added seven.
Sophomore Elissa Brett, back in the lineup after missing the previous two games due to injury, had 13 points and seven boards, while senior Madisen Parker scored 12 points off the bench.
Â
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons made nine three-point field goals on Wednesday night, extending an impressive streak. BGSU has now made at least one three-pointer in each of the last 501 contests, the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.
• BG has not been held without a triple in nearly 16 years, since a game at Akron (a 61-52 BG win) on Feb. 12, 2005.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I loved our fight and effort tonight, but we must take better care of the basketball moving forward. We will have to learn from this and get ready for Saturday."
FIRST QUARTER
• After spotting the Bulls a bucket just over two minutes in, BGSU went on a 7-0 run. The Falcons went scoreless on four-straight possessions to begin the game, but sophomore Elissa Brett knocked down a three-point try, and her steal led to a spin move and a layup by junior Kadie Hempfling. Hempflings free throws at the 6:35 mark gave the visitors a 7-2 lead.
• Dyaisha Fair's three-pointer was followed by a UB free throw that cut the lead to a single point. Freshman Lexi Fleming took Hempfling's pass and drilled a left-wing triple try, but buckets by Hanna Hall and Fair tied the contest, 10-10, at the first-quarter media timeout.
• But, out of the timeout, Fleming drove the lane and found an open Hempfling with a nifty bounce pass that led to a wide-open layup. Nyla Hampton then spotted her fellow freshman, resulting in another Fleming trey and a 15-10 lead.
• Hempfling's three-ball was followed by a long-range shot from senior Madisen Parker, and the Falcons had an 11-0 run and a 21-10 lead.
• A pair of Fair free throws snapped UB's scoreless stretch of nearly four minutes, and the Bulls went nearly five minutes without a field goal before an impressive play by Cheyenne McEvans ended the quarter. McEvans blocked a BG three-point attempt at the top of the key, grabbed the rebound and hit a runner from just inside the arc as the buzzer sounded. BGSU led, 21-14, after a quarter.
• Hempfling had nine points and Fleming six in the period. The Falcons had seven assists on seven field goals in that opening quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• Hampton's steal and layup opened the second-quarter scoring, and after Fair answered with a three-pointer, freshman Kenzie Lewis found a cutting Hempfling for an open layup and a 25-17 lead. Another Hempfling bucket, this time a pull-up jumper off of a Brett look, made it a 10-point game.
• Another Hempfling hoop midway through the quarter was answered by a Hall triple that cut the BG lead to five. Hempfling scored in the paint yet again, but a quick UB run was capped by a Keowa Walters jumper that brought the Bulls within two points, 31-29.
• Freshman Jasmine Clerkley, on her first offensive possession of the night, grabbed an offensive rebound in traffic, was fouled and hit a free throw at the 2:19 mark. Parker's three-pointer off of Hempfling's cross-court pass doubled the BG lead, and after Fair and McEvans each scored for the hosts, redshirt freshman Macy Spielman knocked down a long two-pointer to cap the first-half scoring. Spielman faked a three-point try to get her defender in the air, and she then took a dribble and swished a shot attempt from just inside the arc. BGSU led, 37-33, at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• Brett was fouled with the Falcons running after a Lewis rebound, and Brett's two charity tosses gave BG a 39-33 lead. But, back-to-back long-distance shots by Fair tied the game. Fleming took a Lewis pass and put the ball high off glass and in, but Hall's three-pointer put UB on top, 42-41, with just over two minutes gone.
• BG responded quickly, as Hampton hit a jumper, but another Fair triple gave the hosts the lead. Brett's driving layup was answered by a McEvans layup, but Fleming's floater evened the score, 47-47, with just under six minutes left in the quarter.
• Fair knocked down a three-pointer to begin an 8-0 run for the hosts. McEvans scored after a steal, and a long triple from Fair just before the shot clock expired gave UB a 55-47 lead.
• Fleming's charity tosses snapped the UB run, and after two Buffalo free throws, Parker knocked down a three-point try in front of the BG bench. The Falcons trailed, 57-52, after 30 minutes.
• Buffalo went 6-for-7 from three-point range, and just 2-of-7 from inside the arc, in the third quarter. Fair made all five of her three-point tries and missed all three of her two-point attempts in the period.
FOURTH QUARTER
• A Parker steal on the first possession of the quarter gave BG the ball and resulted in a Brett free throw. Fleming came up with two offensive rebounds on the next BG trip down the floor, getting fouled after the second board and hitting two shots to cut the UB lead to 57-55.
• The teams traded hoops, with Brett's jumper getting BG back within two, but Zena Elias hit a jumper, and a steal led to a layup by Fair. Hall's catch-and-shoot three-pointer gave UB a nine-point lead, 66-57, with 6:28 to go.
• Brett sliced her way between two Bulls for an offensive board and a putback, and Lewis drove inside for a layup then hit a pair of free throws to get the Falcons back within three points at the 4:36 mark. But, after the teams traded scoreless possessions, another Hall triple gave UB a 69-63 lead with three-and-a-half minutes to go.
• Fleming made a pair of free throws, but Hall did the same, and Fair knocked down two-of-three shots at the stripe with 1:45 remaining. Parker hit a three-point try, but Fair made a long-distance shot at the other end. The Bulls would take a 10-point lead, their largest of the game, on two Adebola Adeyeye tosses with 47 seconds left.
• After a BG timeout, Hempfling almost immediately made a three-pointer, and the Bulls quickly turned the ball back over. Fleming was fouled and made both shots with 32.7 seconds on the clock, making it a 78-73 game.
• Again, the Falcons forced a turnover. A pass by Fair was tipped, with Fleming grabbing the ball. Brett was fouled with 25.3 ticks remaining and split her free throws.
• But, BG would pull no closer. The Falcons pressed again, forcing UB into a timeout, and after the hosts inbounded the ball, a foul resulted in two free throws by Jessika Schiffer with 19.1 seconds left. UB's final six points of the game came at the line.
