BGSU outshoots EMU by a 33-6 count en route to fourth-straight win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team controlled Thursday evening's (Oct. 14) match from start to finish, posting a 3-0 victory over Eastern Michigan University in Mid-American Conference action at Cochrane Stadium.
Madi Wolfbauer, Nikki Cox and Lynsey Spotts scored for the Falcons (6-5-3, 5-1-1 MAC), who enjoyed a 33-6 advantage in shots. BGSU had 15 shots on goal on the night, compared to just two for the Eagles (2-10-2, 1-5-1 MAC).
Lili Berg made two saves in goal as the BGSU defense recorded a shutout for the fourth time in seven MAC matches.
BGSU has won four-straight matches, with Wolfbauer having scored at least one goal in all four contests. Cox had a three-point night, assisting on Wolfbauer's goal before scoring herself.
Chelsea Abbotts had 12 saves, including several acrobatic stops, on the night for the visitors.
Through Thursday's matches, BGSU is tied for second place with Kent State in the MAC standings. Both the Falcons and Golden Flashes have 16 points, trailing league-leading Ohio by a single point.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• BGSU's total of 33 shot attempts was the Falcons' highest in nearly two years. BG also had 33 shots vs. Miami on Oct. 18, 2019.
• The Falcons have not had more than 33 shots in a game in over three years, since the Brown and Orange peppered Youngstown State for 40 shots on Sept. 16, 2018.
• BG's total of 15 shots on goal on Thursday night was the team's highest since firing 19 SOG in that same YSU match in September of '18.
FALCONS REACT
"We're starting to get to the point where we're all working very well together. We're finding passes and moving off each other really well. There's another level that we can get to, but today was a very good showing for us, and we're going to look to continue to get better game after game." – Nikki Cox
"I feel like we are getting better and better every game. We did a great job of connecting passes, and I think we are still building." – Maya Dean
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The chances came early and often for the Falcons. With two minutes gone, a Mackenzie Reuber diagonal ball sailed toward the far corner of the goal, and EMU goalkeeper Chelsea Abbotts was forced to swat the ball away for a corner kick. Just over a minute later, Nikki Cox got her head on an EMU goal kick, and Ruby Linton raced behind the defense and got a shot off, but Abbotts was able to make the point-blank save.
• Abbotts was busy all night long. With 14 minutes gone, she tipped a Katie Cox header over the bar after another Reuber cross, then saved an Isabelle Gilmore shot in traffic after the ensuing corner kick.
• Only a few minutes later, Madi Wolfbauer took a nifty pass from Kennedy White and fired a shot that was deflected just wide of the right post. Wolfbauer's one-time off of a Linton cross was off the mark several minutes later. But, she would make no mistake in the 28th minute.
• GOAL | Wolfbauer and Nikki Cox worked a combination play after Gilmore stole an attempted clearance by an Eagle defender. Gilmore headed the ball into space, and Wolfbauer, who had pressured the EMU player into the errant pass, came back and picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box. She slid a pass to Cox on her left, cut past a defender, took a return pass and fired. She hard shot from near the penalty spot hit the netting just under the crossbar, and the Falcons had the lead for good.
• BG had several more chances to increase the lead before the half, but could not do so. After some nifty work by Madison Alberty on the left side of the field, she served a ball into the box. It sailed just over the leaping Nikki Cox and bounced toward the far post. White got her head on it, but the shot went just over the bar.
• Two minutes later, Nikki Cox took a Wolfbauer pass and just missed finding the left side of the net. Only 90 seconds after that, Alberty drilled a shot off of the crossbar, and Maya Dean's shot off of the rebound sailed over the goal.
• With 90 seconds left in the half, Emilie Gardner ran onto a Wolfbauer pass  near midfield and made a long run. She slid the ball to Nikki Cox, who hit a hard shot from the top of the 18 that forced Abbotts into an acrobatic diving save.
• GOAL | Eight minutes into the second half, BGSU doubled the lead. Dean stole an errant pass in the Eagles' defensive third of the field, took the ball down the left side and hit a cross into the box. Nikki Cox ran onto the ball, and her header from 12 yards out found the lower-right-hand corner of the goal.
• Katie Cox nearly added to the BG lead moments later, with a nifty move in the box and a quick shot after an Audrey Shea free kick. But, Abbotts made a diving stop to deny Cox.
• With 17 minutes to go, Lacee Bethea blew past an EMU player on the right side of the field and saved the ball from going over the end line. With a lunging effort, Bethea found Katie Cox with a pass, and Cox hit a quick shot from the six-yard line on the right side. But, Abbotts had come off of her line to cut down the angle, and was able to block the shot.
• Just over a minute later, a turnover near midfield gave the ball to EMU's Sophia D'Ambra, who quickly slid a pass forward to Sam Lenahan. Lenahan was behind the defense, and beat BGSU goalkeeper Lili Berg to the ball by a split second near the top of the box. But, Berg blocked Lenahan's shot, and Zoe Hudson cleared the ball away.
• GOAL | The Falcons closed the scoring with just under eight minutes to go. With the Eagles pressing forward, Katie Cox stole the ball near the midfield stripe and quickly played the ball ahead to Lynsey Spotts. Spotts took the ball all the way into the penalty area, forced Abbotts to commit and put a shot past the 'keeper and into the far side of the net.
