Falcons Fall to Buffalo, 1-0
October 21, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Marcy Barberic scored at the hour mark, lifting the University at Buffalo to a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team on Thursday night (Oct. 21). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
The Falcons (7-6-3, 6-2-1 MAC) outshot the Bulls (11-3-2, 5-2-2 MAC) by a lopsided 16-4 margin, and BGSU had a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. But, that lone UB SOG found the lower-left-hand corner of the net, giving the Bulls – the preseason MAC favorite – the victory.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to third place in the league standings, one point behind second-place Kent State and four points in back of league-leading Ohio. The top-six teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the MAC Tournament, with the first- and second-place teams each earning a bye into the semifinal round.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Thursday's loss was just BGSU's fifth setback in the last 44 matches vs. MAC foes.
FALCONS REACT
"It's a really disappointing result. We said to the players, this one stings, because we didn't deserve to lose that game. But now, it's gonna test our adversity, it will test our character and we've got to respond. We need to respond on Sunday, and we need to respond next Thursday with everything still to play for." – Head Coach Jimmy Walker
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons had a scoring chance with just three minutes gone. Mackenzie Reuber's diagonal ball found the feet of Nikki Cox at the top of the 18-yard box. Cox quickly slid a pass to Madi Wolfbauer, but the play was blown dead due to an offside call.
• With just over nine minutes elapsed, Nikki Cox eluded a would-be defender and split two other Bulls backliners with a perfectly-placed pass. Kennedy White received that pass, making a nifty turn at the top of the box, but UB goalkeeper Emily Kelly was able to stop White's shot at the near post.
• In the 14th minute, Lacee Bethea stole the ball at midfield and raced toward the UB end of the field. Kelly was forced to come off of her line, and Bethea slid the ball past the 'keeper and toward the far post. The ball was inches out of the reach of Wolfbauer, and when the striker caught up to the pass, her shot was just wide.
• In the opening minute of the second half, BGSU had a close call. Jasmijn Dijsselhof's diagonal ball was headed back across the penalty area by White. Kelly came off her her line, and Wolfbauer raced to the ball as well. the first player to reach the ball, however, was a UB defender who headed it toward her own goal. Luckily for her, the ball glanced off the top of the crossbar and out of play.
• Five minutes later, Bethea won a corner kick, and that Reuber kick was deflected in the center of the box. The ball went to Audrey Shea, who – despite facing away from goal – was able to put a shot on frame with a de facto bicycle kick. But, Kelly plucked the ball out of the air near the right post.
• In the 67th minute of the contest, Isabelle Gilmore stole the ball near midfield and played a pass to Katie Cox. Cox slid a pass to Nikki Cox, who made a nifty move to get past a UB player. The elder Cox hit a shot from distance, but Kelly pinned the ball to the ground near the left goalpost.
• Several minutes later, Nikki Cox took a pass from Reuber and uncorked a hard, dipping shot from the 18-yard line on the right side. This shot eluded Kelly but was wide left.
• Just one minute later, however, the Bulls got on the board. Marcy Barberic took a pass from Katherine Camper and hit a hard shot from approximately 22 yards out. The ball found the lower left corner of the goal, and the Bulls had the lead for good.
• With 23 minutes remaining, Katie Cox took a pass from White as she was racing toward goal. Cox settled the ball just outside the 18 and blasted a shot, but the scorcher whizzed just a few feet over the bar.
• Wolfbauer hit a hard shot that went just high with 15 minutes to go, and the Falcons had some dangerous possession time as the clock ticked under seven minutes. During the latter sequence, a Ruby Linton cross resulted in a White header that was blocked. Nikki Cox wound up with the ball, took it to the end line and hit a cross, but Wolfbauer's quick one-timer was off the mark.
• The outcome was in doubt until the final seconds. BG continued to pepper Kelly and the Buffalo back line with crosses and shots. A Dijselhoff shot was stopped with 52 seconds left, and after BG won the ball right back, a Bethea cross was knocked out for a corner kick.
• Maya Dean quickly took that corner, and the ball found Bethea at the top of the box. She played a pass to Rachel Muller, who hit a shot that was blocked. Linton corralled the rebound and slid a ball to White, but her shot was deflected out of play by a sliding UB defender as the final seconds ticked away.

• The Falcons had advantages of 16-4 in total shots, 4-1 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kicks.
• BGSU had a 6-2 edge in first-half shots, and a 10-2 lead in that category after halftime.
