Bowling Green's Offensive Outbreak Ousts Bulls
October 30, 2021 | Football
For the Falcons, the offensive pursuit was paced by quarterback Matt McDonald who totaled five touchdowns for the Orange and Brown. McDonald tossed four scores and added another on the ground. Tyrone Broden and Christian Sims each hauled in a pair of the touchdown passes.
On the ground, Terion Stewart registered the first 100-yard rushing game of the season for Bowling Green and added two touchdowns to his stat line. Jhaylin Embry also found the end zone on the ground for the Falcons en route to the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bowling Green struck early in the game with an 81-yard touchdown reception by Christian Sims. On third and 13, Sims hauled a short screen pass, bounced off a would-be tackler and tallied his first touchdown of the season.
- On each of the first two Buffalo drives, Jalen Burton nearly snagged an interception. While he didn't register a pick, Burton still broke up both passes, aiding in two punts to start the game for the Bulls.
- The third Falcon drive stopped at the Buffalo 18 with fourth and eight. However, a fake kick from the field goal formation turned into an eight-yard run by punter and holder Matt Naranjo that resulted in a first down for Bowling Green to keep the drive alive.
- After Matt McDonald ran the ball down to the one-yard line, Jhaylin Embry was able to finish off the drive with a touchdown run off the jet sweep, the first score of Embry's career.
- Karl Brooks logged a key sack on third down to stall a Buffalo drive. The Bulls made a field goal to get on the board with Bowling Green leading 14-3.
- The next Buffalo drive saw Jordan Anderson snag an interception, giving Bowling Green the ball at Buffalo's three-yard line to start a drive.
- Three plays later, Matt McDonald connected with Sims on a play-action pass to increase the Falcons' lead to 21-3.
- Buffalo responded with a touchdown on their next drive, a 14-yard run by Mike Washington, to bring the score to 21-10 Bowling Green.
- Less than a minute later the Falcons responded with a 64-yard yard strike. McDonald connected with Tyrone Broden for the score, marking a new career-long catch for Broden.
- Before the end of the first half, Buffalo blocked a Bowling Green punt, but missed the 52-yard field goal, sending the game to halftime with the Falcons leading 28-10.
- Buffalo began the second half with a drive that lasted over seven minutes and ended with a rushing touchdown to narrow the Bowling Green lead to 28-17.
- The Bulls' rushing attack continued to push on the next Buffalo drive, capped off by a three-yard run by Matt Myers to cut the Bowling Green lead to 28-23 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt.
- Early in the fourth quarter, Devin Taylor picked off Myers to regain possession for Bowling Green, starting a drive that allowed the Falcons to extend their lead on the next play.
- McDonald found Broden for the second time on the day, this one a 30-yard reception for the score, pushing the Bowling Green lead to 35-23.
- Buffalo's answer would come in the form of a 13-yard run by Dylan McDuffie, making the score 35-30, Falcons.
- On the first play of Bowling Green's next drive, Terion Stewart broke loose for a 77-yard touchdown run to push the Falcons' lead to 42-30.
- After the Stewart touchdown, Buffalo responded with a score of their own coming on a rush by Myers to make the score 42-37, BGSU.
- Later, a turnover on downs for Buffalo would hand Bowling Green the ball inside the red zone. Stewart made quick work of the short field to score and extend the lead once again to 49-37 Falcons.
- The Bulls surged back once again, using a pair of long passes to set up a short touchdown pass, 49-44 Bowling Green.
- After recovering the onside kick attempt by Buffalo, the Falcons added to their total. McDonald took what looked like a QB kneel to run out the clock and turned it into a 47-yard touchdown run to seal the deal, 56-44, for the Falcons.

"I am super excited for our team. I thought we played all three phases of the game with much better production. Getting up ahead on this team was really important. We talked all week long about wanting to start fast and I think we did start fast. We had big explosion plays, ran the ball better, which was great, and defensively with all the injuries and everything, I think they did a great job. It was a great win. Last week we had such a disappointment because we are working on taking steps. We took some huge steps forward today and I'm super excited for our team and we need to take the next step." - Scot Loeffler
UP NEXT
