BGSU's lights-out shooting seals the deal as Falcons go 2-0 in Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Kadie Hempfling and the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team blistered the net with scorching second-half shooting on Tuesday night (Dec. 21), downing the University of Tennessee at Martin, 67-52. The game, the final contest of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, was held at South Point Arena.
Hempfling scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the second half for the Falcons (5-4), who end non-conference play on a four-game winning streak.
BGSU went 17-of-28 from the field (60.7%) after halftime, including an 8-of-13 effort from three-point range. Hempfling made all five of her second-half shot attempts, including three from the arc, while fellow senior Madisen Parker was 3-of-4 from long distance en route to 11 points, all in the second half.
Hempfling, playing in her 99th career game as a Falcon, surpassed the 900-point mark for her career.
The Falcons had four runs of eight points or more in the win. BG used a pair of 9-0 runs – one in the first quarter and one in the second – to take a 24-15 lead over the Skyhawks (3-8) at the half. The Falcons allowed UTM to shoot just 24% (6-of-25) in the opening 20 minutes.
An eight-point run in the third period lifted the lead to 18 points, and another 8-0 surge in the fourth quarter gave BGSU a 27-point advantage, the largest of the night.
For the game, the Falcons shot 55% from the field and went 12-of-25 (48%) from the arc. BGSU's hot shooting and a dominant 38-19 rebounding advantage were enough to offset an uncharacteristic 27 turnovers.
The Skyhawks shot 37.7% for the game, but were at just 29.8% before making six-straight shots to end the game. BG led by 25 with three minutes left, before UTM ended the contest on a 13-3 run.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Kadie Hempfling, as mentioned, surpassed the 900-point mark for her BGSU career. Through 99 games as a Falcon, she now has 912 points.
• Hempfling is the 37th player in program history to score more than 900 career points. She moved up five spots on the BGSU career scoring list during the team's trip to Vegas, and now ranks 35th in school history on that chart.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a great trip to Vegas with two team wins. I thought our team got great contributions from everyone, and I really liked our second half tonight. We will keep working to get better as we head into MAC play."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons' first 9-0 run of the night gave BG the lead for good. BGSU hit three-straight three-point field goals, with Morgan Sharps assisting Kadie Hempfling for the first triple, then hitting the other two long-range shots herself. The last shot in that stretch, off of a Hempfling assist, gave the Falcons an 11-2 lead at the evening's first media timeout.
• The Skyhawks held BGSU scoreless for over four minutes, putting together a five-point run of their own. Ella Thompson scored out of the timeout, and Kyannah Grant then scored three-straight points.
• Grant's third point in that time was a free throw, as neither team made a field goal over the last 3:20 of the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• Thompson's reverse layup on UTM's first possession cut the BG lead to just 11-9, but Sophie Dziekan found Hempfling for another trey at the 8:31 mark, and Kenzie Lewis followed with a driving layup. Lewis then fed Nyla Hampton for back-to-back buckets, giving the Falcons another 9-0 run and a 20-9 lead.
• Grant snapped that run with a three-pointer, and Paige Pipkin's hoop made it a seven-point game, but Molly Dever converted a nifty driving layup for a 22-13 BGSU advantage with 3:43 left in the quarter.
• Again, both teams went cold as the quarter wound down, with neither team scoring until Pipkin hit a pull-up jumper with 1:27 on the clock. But, BGSU ended the half with a bucket, as Zoe Miller grabbed a loose ball after a near turnover and laid it in just before the horn sounded. BG took a 24-15 lead into the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Elissa Brett knocked down a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half, and after UTM responded with the next four points, a one-handed laser pass by Lewis found an open Hempfling under the hoop for a bucket (and Hempfling's 899th and 900th career points).
• Then, Hampton grabbed a defensive rebound and took the ball coast-to-coast for a layup and a 31-19 lead.
• Thompson hit two free throws, but BG responded with an 8-0 run, as Madisen Parker sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Miller layup. Those eight points came in approximately 56 seconds, with Parker's second triple during that stretch giving the Orange and Brown a 39-21 lead.
• Buckets by Jocelyn Tate and Hampton helped the Falcons increase the lead to 19 points, 44-25, heading into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling scored on the first possession of the final period, and after Grant answered, Hempfling fed Tate for a layup that began an 8-0 run. Hempfling proceeded to knock down three-point tries on back-to-back BG possessions, with a corner three followed by a 'heat-check' triple out top. Suddenly, the Falcons' lead had ballooned to 27 points, at 54-27.
• The Skyhawks answered, but the lead reached 27 points two more times, as Parker hit a triple, then responded to a UTM layup with a jumper from the right side.
• Brett, who saw her playing time limited due to foul trouble, hit a three-pointer with four minutes to go, then assisted Dziekan on a layup, and BGSU's lead was 64-39 with just over three minutes to go.
• But, the Skyhawks finished the game on a 13-3 run to make the final margin a more-respectable 15 points.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons shot 55.1% from the field on the night, while the Skyhawks shot 37.7%. UTM went just 14-of-47 (29.8%) over the game's first 36-plus minutes, before going 6-for-6 in the final 3:36.
• BGSU made seven more shots than the Skyhawks, while attempting four fewer field goals.
• The Orange and Brown went 12-of-25 (48%) from the arc, while UTM was 3-of-10 from downtown.

• Kenzie Lewis scored two points but led the Falcons with nine rebounds, eight assists and two steals.
• BGSU scored 10 points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, and Hempfling was involved in the scoring of all 10 points. She had eight points, including back-to-back three-pointers, and assisted on the other BG bucket in that stretch.
