TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, behind five double-digit scorers, earned an 88-81 victory at the University of Toledo on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 13) in the 176th edition of the Battle of I-75. The Mid-American Conference game was played inside UT's Savage Arena. With the win, BGSU moves to 11-9 (7-7 MAC) on the season. Bowling Green has won at Toledo in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1996-97.
The Falcons nearly led wire-to-wire, leading for 27:36 of the game's 40 minutes while UT held an advantage for just 8:04. However, the Rockets went on 12-3 run midway through the second half to knot the game at 52-52 with 12:47 left in regulation. From there, BGSU gained complete control, scoring 19 of the next 22 points to take a 71-55 lead with 6:24 left in the contest.
Freshman guard Kaden Metheny broke the 52-52 tie with a jumper with just under 12:30 to go to spark the run. Metheny then hit a long triple in front of the BGSU bench to put the Falcons up by 12 at the 8:17 mark of the second half. UT immediately called a timeout, but BGSU scored the next four points to take a game-high lead of 16 points.
The Rockets went on a desperate run at the end of the game, narrowing the Falcon advantage to two possessions, but BGSU held off the late rally, handing first-place Toledo its first home loss of the season (9-1).
Bowling Green was led by its three seniors – Daeqwon Plowden (22 points and nine rebounds), Justin Turner (21 points and five rebounds) and Trey Diggs (17 points and four rebounds) -- who combined for 60 points, 18 rebounds and five assists. Metheny had a huge game, as well, posting 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Fellow freshman Josiah Fulcher added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

• Bowling Green has won at Savage Arena in back-to-back seasons for just the second time ever and first time since 1996-97. BGSU swept the Rockets in last season's home-and-home, earning an 85-79 victory at UT on Jan. 25, 2020.
• 2020-21 marks the first time in Battle of I-75 history since 1972-73 that each school won on each other's home floor in the same season. In 1973, the Falcons were playing at Anderson Arena and the Rockets were playing at Centennial Hall.
• Bowling Green has won three of its last four games against Toledo for the first time since winning four-straight games in the series from 2009-12.

• Michael Huger picked up his 99th win as Bowling Green's head coach. Huger is on the verge of becoming the sixth varsity basketball coach at Bowling Green to earn 100 career wins, joining Harold Anderson (362), Jim Larranaga (170), Dan Dakich (156), Paul Landis (156), John Weinert (146) and Louis Orr (101). Huger would be the first BGSU graduate to earn 100 wins as head men's basketball coach. The Falcons are 99-84 under Huger.
• The Bowling Green defense showed up in a big way, as the Falcons turned 12 Toledo turnovers into 22 points. BGSU limited Toledo to an ugly 28.9 percent (11-of-38) clip from downtown – UT's third-worst shooting performance of the season.
• Bowling Green dominated in transition, scoring 24 points on the fast break compared to 11 fast-break points for Toledo. BGSU's bench played a huge factor in the game, as well, outscoring the Toledo bench by a 29-6 margin.
• The BGSU offense was clicking on the afternoon. The Falcons made 10 triples (10-for-24 = 41.7 percent) in a game for the sixth time this season. Bowling Green shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) as a team from the field, marking its best shooting percentage in a MAC road game in 2020-21. After not getting to the line in the first half, the Falcons went 16-for-22 (72.7 percent) from the line over the final 20 minutes.

The native of Philadelphia has scored 1,048 points in the Orange and Brown in 117 games.
• Fifth-year senior Justin Turner scored in double figures for the 100th time in his illustrious Bowling Green career. Turner had five rebounds and scored 21 points, marking the 51st 20-plus point game of his collegiate career. Turner has scored 1,998 points in 114 games. The native of Detroit is two points shy of becoming the 17th player in Mid-American Conference history to reach 2,000 career points.
• Turner went 3-for-4 from downtown. He's made 178 three-pointers as a Falcon and moved past Shane Komives (1992-96 | 177) for sixth place on BGSU's all-time three-point field goals list. Turner can move past Martin Samarco (2005-07 | 180) for fifth all-time with three more three-pointers.
• Turner and Plowden scored 20-plus points in the same game for the second time in their historic Bowling Green careers. The only other time the duo each scored 20-plus points in the same contest came earlier this season at Miami on Jan. 21, 2021.
