BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Fifth-year senior guard Justin Turner became BGSU men's basketball's all-time leading scorer on Wednesday in a 76-70 loss to Western Michigan University. With the loss, Bowling Green drops to 10-8 (6-6 MAC) in 2020-21. The Mid-American Conference game was played inside of the Stroh Center.
Turner entered the night just five points away from surpassing Anthony Stacey (1995-2000 | 1,938 points), who held the record since Feb. 16, 2000. Turner broke the record with a three-pointer in front of the WMU bench with 13:53 left in the opening half.
The native of Detroit has scored 1,959 points in 112 games in the Orange and Brown. On the night, Turner was his usual self, scoring a game-high 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Turner also added six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Fellow senior Daeqwon Plowden became the 49th men's basketball player in school history to score 1,000 points. Plowden needed seven points to break the 1,000-point plateau, and he finished with 18. Plowden now ranks 48th at BGSU in scoring (1,011) and 13th in rebounding (662).
The Falcons trailed by as many as 14 points, but cut the deficit down to a single possession multiple times in the second half. With the Falcons down by two points with under a minute left in regulation, WMU's Greg Lee, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, hit a dagger jumper fading away from the basket to bump the lead to four. WMU made a season-high 12 three-pointers on 46.2 percent shooting in the contest.
COACH HUGER QUOTE
"It's just difficult right now. We have to do a better job executing. It's difficult; when you're on a streak like this it's always difficult. You try everything to get out of it. No one is going to come in feeling sorry for us. We have to fight ourselves out of it and we'll be fine."
