Freshman doubles twice to plate BG's first three runs
The second game of Wednesday's scheduled doubleheader was suspended due to darkness with the teams locked in a scoreless tie in the middle of the third inning. the game will not be made up.
Payton Gottshall picked up the win in the circle, striking out seven batters in her complete-game effort. Gottshall has now thrown a complete game in all nine of her starts this season, and she now has 148 strikeouts in 74 2/3 innings pitched in 2021.
In addition to Godbolt, Sammy Dees and Evelyn Loyola each had two hits in the win. Madi McCoy scored two runs to add to her team-leading total.
BGSU-UD – HOW IT HAPPENED
•  The Falcons broke on top early, scoring twice in the first inning. With one out, Sammy Dees doubled down the left-field line off of UD starting pitcher Sarah Bailitz. Madi McCoy drew a walk, and the runners moved to second and third, respectively, on a grounder.
• Payton Hamm was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Maycee Godbolt followed with a double to left-center that plated both Dees and McCoy. That two-base hit, as it turned out, gave the Falcons the lead for good.
• BG starter Payton Gottshall issued a leadoff walk to Megan Ward, then retired the next nine UD hitters.
• Godbolt and the Falcons added to the lead in the third inning. Evelyn Loyola singled with one out, and pinch-runner Marlie McNulty promptly stole second. Hamm reached for the second-straight plate appearance, drawing a walk, and Godbolt followed with her second consecutive double, scoring McNulty and sending Hamm to third. Bailitz retired the next two hitters without allowing the Falcons to add to the three-run lead.
• The Flyers got a pair of runs back in the fourth. After Emily Daniel led off with a single – the Flyers' first hit of the game – Alyssa Cacini followed with a homer down the line to cut BG's lead to a single run. The hosts put two more runners aboard in the inning, but Gottshall got an inning-ending grounder to second.
• Each team scored three times in the sixth. Emma Miller led off the inning with a pinch-hit single in her first collegiate at-bat, and a Nikki Sorgi sac bunt sent Sarah Gonzalez to second. Greta L'Esperance singled to put runners at the corners, and after L'Esperance stole second, a Sammy Dees sac fly plated Gonzalez and sent L'Esperance to third.
• Dees was the first of three-straight BGSU hitters to drive in a run. McCoy singled to score L'Esperance, and Loyola's double to left-center brought McCoy around to score.
• The hosts rallied to within a single run in the bottom of the inning. After a Cacini walk and a Katie Reeg double, a grounder scored a run, and a Taylor Erschen single scored another. With two outs, Morgan Mataja singled to score Erschen to make it a 6-5 game.
• BG got a runner as far as third in the top of the seventh, after a Godbolt walk, a Sophie Weber sac bunt and a stolen base by pinch-runner Peyton Dolejs. But, BG could not add to the lead.
• In the bottom of the inning, Gottshall allowed a one-out single to Daniel, but then got Cacini to pop up to second base before striking out Reeg to end the game.
• Sammy Dees and Godbolt each went 2-for-3, while Loyola was 2-for-4 for the Falcons. Daniel went 3-for-4 for the Flyers.
• In the second game, BGSU pitcher Harlie Vannatter and UD starter Addy Bullis combined to allow just one hit, a second-inning single by Mateja. But, in the middle of the third inning, the game was called due to darkness. The game will not be made up, and the statistics do not count.
