Gottshall fires her second no-hitter of the year in her Meserve Field debut
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team, playing a home game for the first time in nearly two years, seemed to enjoy the friendly confines of Meserve Field on Friday afternoon (March 19). BGSU scored three first-inning runs, rolling along to an 8-0, five-inning win over Central Michigan University in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
Redshirt freshman Payton Gottshall, in her Meserve Field debut, fired a no-hitter. Senior Madi McCoy had a two-run double in the first inning to stake Gottshall and the Falcons (now 9-7 overall) to an early lead, and true freshman Maycee Godbolt homered as part of a four-run third.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
• Friday's game was the first contest at Meserve Field in 689 days.
• On April 30, 2019, the Falcons picked up an 8-3 win over Cleveland State. At approximately 6:12 p.m. that day, BGSU pitcher Hannah Davies got a CSU batter to hit a foul pop that was caught by Falcon first baseman Kellie Natham for the final out.
• That marked the last action at Meserve until CMU's Shaidan Knapp stepped into the batter's box to face Payton Gottshall on Friday afternoon.
• A total of 14 players on the 23-woman BGSU roster were not on the team the last time the Falcons played a home game.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"It was a great team win today, with some incredible defensive plays and a top-to-bottom performance by our offense. In the circle, Gottshall was efficient and focused. It was a great effort by Gottshall and the defense to earn that second no hitter for the season."
BGSU-CMU – HOW IT HAPPENED
•  Gottshall set down the Chippewas in the first. After leadoff batter Shaiden Knapp was hit by a pitch, the BG freshman got Abbey Tolmie to pop up a bunt for the first out. Knapp was caught stealing, and a grounder got BG out of the inning. Then, the Falcon offense went to work.
• Greta L'Esperance led off the BG first with an infield single, and the redshirt freshman promptly stole second. Sammy Dees drew a walk, and both runners came around to score when Madi McCoy doubled.
• Evelyn Loyola reached on an error, and a two-out walk to Sophie Weber loaded the bases. Then, Sarah Gonzalez drew a walk as well, with McCoy trotting home with BGSU's third run.
• A McCoy single was the only baserunner for either team in the second inning, but BG added to the lead in the third.
• Maycee Godbolt led off the home half of the third with a solo homer for left, and Weber and Gonzalez each drew walks once again. Kaitlyn Bean replaced Grace Lehto in the circle for the Chippewas, but a walk to Nikki Sorgi loaded the bases, and everyone was save on a L'Esperance grounder, with Weber scoring on the play. Then, Gonzalez tagged and scored on a Sammy Dees sac fly, and Sorgi scored on a wild pitch.
• BGSU scored those four third-inning runs with just one hit.
• After Gottshall again retired the side in order in the fourth, BG added to the lead, as Sorgi singled to score pinch-runner Makailah Dees with the Falcons' eighth run.
• In the fifth, CMU got a two-out baserunner via a BG error, but Gottshall got Samantha Mills to ground out to third to end the ballgame.
STATS & LEADERS
• McCoy went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Falcons, scoring a run and driving in two. Four other Falcons had a hit apiece, including Godbolt, who homered to lead off the BG third.
• Weber was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and a run, while Gonzalez walked three times, scoring a run and driving in a run. Sorgi had a hit and one of BG's eight bases on balls.
• Gottshall faced just 16 hitters in her five innings of work. She struck out three hitters and did not issue a walk en route to improving to 9-3 on the year.
NOTES
• Individual game records prior to 1996 are incomplete, but Payton Gottshall is believed to be the first player in program history to throw two no-hitters in a career, much less in the same season.
• Gottshall threw a perfect game against Cleveland State last month, on the season's opening weekend.
• Jessie Milosek was involved in a pair of no-hitters, throwing a complete-game no-no vs. Kent on April 22, 2000, then combining with Andrea Genter on a no-hitter at Tennessee State two years later (Feb. 22, 2002). Milosek pitched the final three innings of the latter win.
• But, Gottshall is believed to be the only Falcon hurler in history to pitch more than one complete-game no-hitter.
UP NEXT
• The BGSU-CMU series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 20). First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
• Then, the Falcons and Chippewas wrap up their four-game set with a single game on Sunday (March 21), beginning at noon.
